bad waterpump?

how can i find out if my water pump is bad, before the engine even starts? i heard that if the pulley wobbles, but is torqued down, that means that a seal or a bearing is bad and the water pump should be replaced. is this true?

Yup. There should be no play in water pump shaft at all.
IF it dont leak today it will very soon.

IF the fan doesn't let go first & take a walk through your radiator. Happened to my dad once (on a Ferd). I'd be replacing the water pump pronto.
