I've got a fairly strong 318/349 stroker that I'd like to hook up to a 904 transmission so I can keep my driveshaft, linkage, etc. What year 904 should I look to rebuild to have decent strength, better gear ratios, etc? The machine shop figures I should make around 425 hp with 10.2 compression and prepped rhs heads. The voodoo cam recommends a 2800 stall converter.

Try to find an A999, They have a 4 or 5 disc clutch pack. They were mostly behind 360's. It most likley will be a lock-up but you can convert it to a non-lockup.

you can convert any 904 with 4 disc front clutch pac to 5 with ease....

the later models do offer the 2.74/1,54 wide ratio gear set...instead of the standard 2.45/1.45 gear set...

At that level a good rebuilt 904 is fine, if you want a 999 get a non lockup to start with, you're going to need the input shaft and pump from one anyways so it's cheaper to start with the right one first.

My buddys 340 Dart ran 10.8's for 3 years with a 4 clutch 904 and 7260 U joints, when he swapped in a 416 and ran a 9.90 the trans lasted 2 passes and the U joints lasted 4 passes.

we used the gears out of a '998' and stuck'em in my '71 non lockup 904.

had 6 disc clutch with the use of a few diff plates and bushings for the front drum etc..

at 1 point I aspired to build trannys, I was successful with 3, then never rebuilt one again so I'm way rusty on the specifics.

I had a 77/904 built with lower 1st gear, change out the drum, red racing belts,9 blue clutches.I run the conv. U-joints 7260/7290.My cars 60fts are 1.56,1.57 behind the 410.Any good trans. shop should be able to build you what you want.I got advise from 346Duster(Chris Andrews Racing)he runs a trans shop and also races with a 904.Good Luck.
