Brainstormin' 440 vs 5.9 ...

-
Ask and Ye shall receive! Dyno results at the 2 minute mark. Stock cam and pistons .155 below deck, fresh guides and valve springs.

These figures start making it look like a near dead heat with the magnum.

that's... right what I had in mind from the beginning. Probably 280 hp gross with single exhaust. Headers/duals add about 40 getting around 320. Remember, a 318 2bbl was 230 hp gross. 440 is an easy 50 hp better in the very least.. making about 280 hp gross. Maybe 300. Kind of what I been thinking forever

Here lies a fair question:
Would this combo beat a '68 GTX if both had slicks ?? GTX has 375 hp, better aerodynamics. If there was a factory '68 GTX, 3.55 auto with slicks would my RV 440 line up against it in my truck and beat it to the stripe ?? So what would you expect the GTX to run, and do you have my truck ahead, behind, or beside it, make your best judgement off of that.

I haven’t looked into that topic yet, but I probably wouldn’t bet against the drag truck too hard. But I dare say that all of the sudden, those 13 second range times aren’t looking so bad now, are they?

Exactly. It's why when they wanted me to play my hand, I said 13.90. I could be way off, but that's how I figure it. I do not expect it to run as the 5.9 ran. 12.9 is extremely good run for just an long bed with a very very mild, 360.

I don’t think your 13.9 is going to be far off really. Take all the dyno numbers and knock what, 10-15hp for accessories off? 39-4000lbs. If it goes slower we’ll all just blame you anyways:rofl:

Not bad but In the end of the day, not too much more powerful than the 5.9 especially if it had similar cam, in the end I think the 440 gonna need some porting to make a real gain.

My signature line of “One physical test is worth a thousand expert opinions” applies very well to this thread! One interesting possibility comes to mind, though. You could potentially raise compression later on with a set of lighter hemi or 7.1 length rods and a rebalance. Maybe for less than a re-bore and new pistons.

Spring... It's very cold here, we have snow, getting more snow tonight, and below zero temps this weekend. I'm here, and be glad you are not !!!

I keep looking at the 4.30 gears, 29 inch slicks, and 450ish ft/lbs of torque at 3200 with the 2500’ish stall converter. And then looking at the way the truck was launching while breaking into the 12’s. While it’s probably not going to be as fast as the 5.9 magnum, we might get to see a little daylight showing under the left front tire.
