Brainstormin' 440 vs 5.9 ...

-
they have TRW Pistons, zero deck, he talks of a Hughes cam so it’s really not relevant to my engine other than to say mine will be a lot less horsepower, which we already know cause the factory stamped it at 195 net
The asthmatic cylinder heads of his combination may help you with your "off the trailer" gear selection.

Other than that, the engine was a disappointment for the money someone spent, in comparison to the factory 440 Magnum specs: No Bueno...

Alrighty! We’ll get you down for 13.30 with a gear that works. Taking a dive to the lower end of the spectrum!

And if the track is only racing 8th mile that day, because once in a while that happens to us, we’ll just use the online calculator to convert to a quarter mile. It’ll be the best I can do.

I wouldn't bank on that "a lot". I think something's wrong with his. As in maybe it doesn't have the zero deck height.

All these videos and dynos... lol. best way to look at this is what would 195 net hp be in gross hp power. Then add headers, which would be what in HP gains? It's really that simple.

I just found and bought a set of old NOS TRW pop ups. 12.5:1 i believe they are supposed to be. + .030 for 440. They are out there for down the road modifications

If net is 80% of gross If. Then 195 gross converted to net plus headers 10% gain comes upto 268 hp net my calculator shows 268hp at the flywheel in a 3800 lb vehicle comes out to a 14.66 1/4 mile time YMMV
It will be interesting to see actual results

I speculate that his best case scenario would be to “harness the meat of the 440 torque band” over the greatest % of the 1320’.

I tried 4.30.1 in a combination and felt that the powerband blew right by maximum torque over two short a distance. Dropped to 3.91:1 and lowered my ET while increasing the trap MPH.

Ok, I like this thought. Some math coming to a conclusion. It will be interesting how it actually performs to this post. Thanks!

I will know a lot more of this thought for the engine of discussion when I street drive/test it. I too have experienced similar results

oh... i forgot! (we forgot) !! There is the "X-Factory" - - - the rusty cylinder  ...... .. .. . Remember, I honed out the one cylinder, cleaned the landings on the one piston, and put new rings on the one piston. Didn't do a compression test either when it was in the '79 Magnum.... so it remains a m-y-s-t-e-r-y!!

Considering the size of that "coffee can" connected to the con-rod, I'm confident that the blow by of that cylinder is minimal.

I forgot about the Torqer and 750 DP might be worth a few HP
Maybe 300? total. I’m throwing darts. That’ll get you to the low 14s?
Is it April yet, felt that way here today 40s and raining. Lol
