brake lights

i have a 71 dodge demon four ways work turn signals work no brake lights what can i check? could it be turn signal wiring?

Do you have power coming "out" of the brake light switch when pedal is pressed?

If so, it's the turn signal switch, or the VERY short wire from the brake light switch to the column switch.

First suspect the brake light switch on the pedal. Easy to remove the terminal to test. The connector to the rear harness is behind the kick panel (driver's left foot). With a wiring diagram, you can apply +12 V to the correct wire(s) there to test everything from there back. If above OK, suspect the turn signal switch.

Stop and dome light are on the same fuse. If no dome light, suspect blown fuse. If you're getting power to the dome light, the circuit through the fuse panel is good.

The brake and turn signals provide power to the same pole of the rear light bulb. It's a PITA, but make sure there's power to the brake light switch and through the switch before checking out the rear harness. Good luck.

You are right, but I don't mention that kind of thing because so many of these old girls have multiple problems. Hell, my dome light isn't even hooked up. I don't even drive much at night anymore, so I figure it's "one more thing."

I had the same problem. Turns out one of the terminals pulled off the brake pedal switch when I dropped the steering column to replace my steering gearbox. Pluggedit back in and was good to go.

Maybe he works nights, i.e. sleeps during the day. Guessing the "four ways" refers to the hazard/flashers. Well, in any case we tried...

i am currently dealing with this problem also . I do have power out of brake switch but not at the kick panel now what ...also my car is a 4speed I dont know if that makes a difference

I also had the same problem, and it was the turn signal switch. I removed the steering wheel and pulled the cancelling cam off the signal mech and bent out the tabs to make sure I was getting a good connection. Voila, brake lights now!! Geof

If you for certain have power out of the brake light switch, it's a very short wire that goes from there to the column switch connector. You might check there just to make absolutely sure it's not losing at the column connector.

But this is almost ALWAYS a bad column switch.
