Folks, anybody have any insight on why the fender tag would say 702 for a build date on a 1974 model year Gold Duster?

Thanks!

Because 702 is July the second.

Exactly. So the build date was supposed to be July 2, 1974. That would make it a pretty late production 1974 model, if I remember correctly production usually stopped mid-July-ish to re-tool for the next model year which usually began production around the 2nd week of August.

You could also post a picture of the fender tag, if you wanted to confirm some of the details. You can cover the last few digits of the VIN if you're worried about that.

Here is a rundown of the tag:

M21 R11 V8W V9W Y16
V4W U A64 B41 G51 H51
KY4 D2Y 000 702 893490
E24 D34 VL29 C4G 273540

The only dead-ends I see are A64, G51, and V9W. The decoder I used says these are unknown so if anybody know more, let me know.

Thanks to 72blunblu as well.

A64 is the Gold Duster package. G51 is LH outside mirror, manual, chrome. V9 is 73- 74 Sport Stripes Up and Over Tape and 72-74 hood sport stripes. W is white.
