Has anybody ever replaced cam bearings. The second bearing in is starting to pit. I ordered new bearings with the Lunati cam. Is this something I can do or does it require a machine shop, special tools? The lower end is still together but its on a stand.
 
It requires a cam bearing installation tool. Its basically a long bar with a rubber cushioned driver on the end, and a sliding cone to assist in keeping the driver straight in the cam bore. You may not want to buy one, but borrowing one will definitely make the job go faster, easier and more accurately. Be sure to line up the lube oil holes with those in the block.
 
hi, the proper method is have a bare block, this way, you can see where the oil holes are and align them correctly. there are guys that claim can install bearings with assembled. I do this for a living, won't work ,period!!best bet have a machine shop do it.
 
You need the tool, and as was said, it is next to impossible to do right with the crank in the block. You can undo the rods and use rubber bands to hold them away, then pull the main caps off and the crank out. that's how i'd do it. Or you can ignore it. Pitting isnt a huge deal, there's not a lot of stress on them, and you will more than likely need to clearance the new ones to your crank, requiring more swearing because it's all together. 5 large pressure fed bearings float the cam... I wouldn't sweat a few pits.
 

I'd do the cam bearings just to eliminate the pitting. I've had two perfectly good 318's die due to oil pressure, and the only bad bearings in them were the cam bearings. If the engine is on the stand, now is the time to get cam bearings in it.
 
a cam bearing tool is neaded,ensure the oil gallery is in alignment
 
max340,measure your cam and check with the specs, put a high volume oil pump on ensuring all your seals and gaskets are good.
 
my wife and i bought a 1964 plymouth valiant 200 signet 2 dr convertable just before xmas.we are going to restore this car but have run into a parts problem. apperantly this valiant is canadian,it has a valiant front end,and from the fire wall back it is 1963 dodge dart.so it has round tail lights.im trying to locate some body panels whole, not just patches.Ihave found a lot of parts on the internet,but nat allot to do with the body.

I installed a high volume oil pump and re-bearinged the bottom end. Only place left to be losing that much oil was the cam bearings. Seals and gaskets have little to do with oil pressure, but they too were in good shape, having been replaced when I did the bearings.
