Cam looks like its toast...whaddya think??

-
Dad and I think its toast too, there is lots of decayed edges on several lobes. Not gonna take a chance on it. Any reason why the heads have to come off if we get the machine shop to replace the cam bearings?
I will chk out Comp cams.

Thanks everyone, keep the cam recommendations coming too

Do NOT replace the cam bearings unless they are bad. ma mopar even stated that in the performance manual.

that cam is shot!! and I'd never use a timing chain with any amount of slop if I could help it. ( Gear drive set-ups for me ) I'd replace both cam and lifters and timing set. Many years ago I had a 273, and I installed a mopar purple shaft 474 lift cam which was a pretty mild cam, and it ideled good. That thing ran really good.

Steve........Im no expert buy any means. If you have it apart and i would just replace.......Sucks some but hell your half way there now.......Take care, best of luck:D

4spdragtop if your dad agreed to buy a racier cam go for it but here is the way a cam wears.the "worn" spots will be very shiny and smooth from contact with the lifter not pitted and rough. The egde of the lobe on the lift side will be very sharp and flattened out and from your top picture the far right and middle lobe is facing toward the camra and they look to be in good shape, the edges on all the lobes look rough and jagged so they can't be worn down. And I am talking about worn lobes and corroded or rusted spots just the lobe geometry. That said the unshiny spots could be from not running much over time and the cam dried out and corroded which will lead to an early death, how long no one knows but since yall decided to replace, put it in and enjoy that thing.

If there is that much wear on the cam, how much is on the rest of the engine, bearings, rings, valves etc?

Cam was definitely toast. We put the new cam in a while back, I guess I should have updated this thread...LOL Lots of updates I have to do on dads resto thread. We went comp cams, and installed solid cam and lifters, dbl roller timing chain and gears, new springs, retainers and keepers and re-gasketed the entire engine. Here is the specs/link for the cam, and thanks for the reminder!! Oh here is a youtube link as well for the cam break-in

Ahhh 10-4, car is running good, I will update the dads 67 "S" capade thread here in a couple days. The pistons in it are std ones, not the hi-po 10.5:1
