91 LA block 360 with factory roller hydraulic cam. Now with a comps cam, hydraulic roller as well.

What should end play be and how to control it.
I checked by hand and it probably has about 0.150". I have not seen a spec for it. When I go to the shop I can easily check with dial indicator if necessary.

Is there a spec for camshaft end play??

Did you check the end play with the cam thrust plate installed and with the cam gear on the cam and tight? The cam will tend to move rearward when the engine is running. This is known as a rearward thrust cam. In other words, cam end play should be minimal [.009 to .015] or so. But must be checked with the above mentioned components installed and somewhat tight!

The cam thrust plate (the plate behind the gear) is the only thing that controls it. Like Rob said you have to have it and the top timing gear installed to check it.

The thrust plate is installed. But the cam bolt for the sprocket is not torqued.
Will check it as if it was properly installed and torqued and put the dial gauge and get a more accurate reading on Friday when I go to the shop.

Thanks so far guys.
