Well i have my engine almost ready to go in! now i need to get that power to the ground! I have an 8.25 with 2.92's in it (i think). I think the gears are a little high and the axle is open. i would like to lock it up or at least put a posi in it. Or should i shop for a new/used axle? i did find a complete rear axle assembily out of a 98 dakota and it has a posi and 3.93 gears. it is hard to find a 8.75 around here. i was also thinking of a ford 9". I will be useing the car on the streets 95% of the time so it wont see to many 1/4 mile runs. what does everyone think? should i just put new gears and a locker in what i have or should i go shopping?
 
If i were you i would posi that 8.25 and Coyote Jack has a set of 3.91 gears if you want them. He offered them to me but I find them a bit too much. I would like 3.23s better
 
Mine was a 1 legger so I bought a Auburn pro series sure grip and swapped the 323s to 355s. Auto trans. I wanted a little more tire burning grunt. There was nothing wrong with the 323s, great all round gear, my 2 cents.
 
The 8.25 should be fine. Mikelbeck was running one in his Duster and he was running low 12's with slicks. If the Dakota rearend is an 8.25 then the carrier should bolt right in. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not positive but I think the axle spline count changed later on so that sure grip from the Dakota may not work.

Farmer it's a shame were not close. A buddy of mine has a complete A-body 8-1/4 with 3:21 gears and sure grip for sale reasonable.
 
well maybe i will find a set of lower gears for my 8.25 and buy a locker! what would you guys suggest for gear ratio? i will be running a punched out 360 and i have a 4spd std trans!
 
It depends on what you really want out of the car. If you want some highway driveablity, I would go with something like a 3.55. If you want to really take off quick, and not destroy you gas mileage completely then a set of 3.92's fit the bill. If you are not worried about gas milage at all and relly want the car to scream at the end of the 1/4 then 4.10's or 4.30's are the ticket.
I have 4.10's and I have to say they are great until you are on the highway for any length of time.

If it were me and I had no plans on racing it, just cruising, I'd never consider a 3.91 gear unless the car had 29-30 tall tires. I just pulled the 4:10's out of my Cuda because their just useless over 60 mph. The 3.91 gear is so close to the 4:10 it would be pretty much the same. Since you have a 4spd. you can stall it up to a higher rpm taking off the same as an auto with a high stall converter. This means you can go taller on the gear and still have great performance. You say it's a cruiser only so why not save fuel and run a 3.23 or 3.55? The 3.55 gears will give great take off with a 4spd. and will probably get considerably better fuel mileage than a 3.91 gear.

BTW: I don't know what car you have but if it's an A-body that Dakota rear end you mentioned will be close to a foot too wide.
 
ok sounds good! i think for now i will stick woth the gears i have even though they are a little high for my likeing and invest in a locker that i can put in place of the spider gears! then maybe next winter i will rebuild the rear! i am looking at a 27spline powertrax locker from summit! that will save me from taking the ring gear out.
 
If you do a lot of street driving you won't like the Powertrax. It does a lot of popping while turning. But if you don't mind the noise it will be ok. You need a limited slip differential like a clutch type or cone type.

You have to take the ring gear out to install a limited slip differential however.
 
Do you want the Lock Rite or Power Trax?

Lock Rite is louder, Power Trax is quieter. Both are same basic configuration, but the Power Trax has a feature that brings noise down in the turns.

I have Lock Rite in 8 3/4. Car has Flowmaster knockoffs dumping at axle, and I can't hear the clicking at all.
 
i have dual glasspacks, headers and a 425+hp smallblock so i dont think i will hear the click! lol! im just looking at the cost and the time and hassel of taking the ring gear out! if i do for some reason i will change it next winter when i have more time and money! i may even find a 9" or an 8.75 and move the springs inboard while im at it!
 
I didn't think you had to remove the ring gear to insert either one?
GM C clip axles, you can remove and install everything from the opening in the carrier. I have done Lock Rite in 8 3/4 and we had to remove ring gear, but that was only because the cross pin could not be removed without removing ring gear. If someone can post a picture of inside of 8 1/4 so you can see if the big center pin can slide out, then you can probably install without removing ring gear....
I have only installed these on GM C clip axles, and 8 3/4 mopar.
