Cap OD for a 7290 Yoke is 1 1/8 inches, for the 1350 is 1 3/16 inches. on a 12.5 sec 3600 lbs car is the step up worth it?

Thinking about having a new light weight drive shaft made. Looks like not all companies make drive shaft yoke to fit the 7290. But it looks like the 1350 is everywhere. I beat the crap out of this car on the street and at the track. I have a Gear Vendors unit on the trans. It's output shaft has the 1350 on it. I am looking for stronger and lighter. With a drive shaft that is just 34.5 inches long don't know what I would gain. Looking for better 60 foot number.
Aso thinking about next size smaller tire. 275 X 60 - 15, 28.19 diameter to 275 X 50 - 15, 26.42 diameter. Might be the better move.

I've had a 7290 yoke in my 68 B that weighs 3880 with me in it for 25 years. Plenty of mid 12 runs at 114 mph. No problem. My 1 aluminum shaft made it through the burn out and then grenaded at launch and ya it was a conversion joint. No 7290 yokes said the builder.

Go with the 1350 because if it breaks you can easily find another and if you build a more powerful engine you're already set!

I have been running a rear conversion u-joint old smaller to a 7290. 7290 on the center section. Been nervous about it for a while. I just keep it greased well.. that's the big reason to change or update the drive shaft.

I think a 7290 is plenty good for mid twelves, and a lighter shaft will only make your wallet lighter. I don't think you will see an ET improvement anywhere.
I did build an aluminum shaft with 1350s on both ends, and billet yokes, but that was for a car with a transbrake and 14/32s.
I guarantee your tire swap idea will have lots more effect on 60 ft. Gearing (shorter tire) will help if it's the right direction, a lighter shaft will do nothing.

I'm running 12.40s with a front 7260 and a rear 7260/7290 combination yeah It's always on my mind.

When I shortened my driveshaft for the GV I went with a Spicer solid 1350. The u joint can be bought anywhere. I doubt I will ever have to replace it. My car is driven to the track and run at least once a week. Put a 26" tire on and your 60' will improve.
