Ok I have a few questions about some parts I ordered. I was looking online and found a good deal on a pair of upper ball joints advertised as Moog. I get them and the box says Carquest. And beside it in smaller writing it says Moog the problem solver. Now the ball joints have obvious differences and they don't have Moog on them anywhere. Would you return them and ask for a refund? I can buy cheap *** Carquest stuff when I get back. Which is what this looks like. I have a few pics her for you to see what I am talking about. They don't look like Moog to me and I can already hear the guy now. It says Moog on the box though.

those aren't the "cheap *** carquest ball-joints" they are Moog manufactured for carquest they are of good quality and likely lifetime warranty if you keep the receipt

I am trying to figure out why the differences. One is nice and machined the other doesn't look near as nice. I ordered these offline so I really don't have a reciept.

The major player manufacturers make and "private" brand stuff for the larger parts merchants. It's been done for years, just no one seemed to recognize it. They look different because Moog uses others to manufacture their parts, so do the others. There aren't that many founderies in the good old USA and more, so some of the stuff is cast overseas and assembled here. Some of it is cast over there and assembled over there, but comes in a box make "Made in the USA".

This is a good question.

I bought a full front end kit for my Dart from one of the regular vendors on the Mopar sites, and before purchasing I specifically asked what brand the parts were. Answer? "Moog".
All the boots for the ball joints and tie rod ends dry rotted and fell off within a week. I hadn't even at time to take it off the stands yet! The parts didn't say "Moog" anywhere on them.

I bought new ball joints for the Neon a couple weeks ago...HUGE Moog logos right on the boots and on the joints.

I'm starting to thing someone is false-advertising.

From what I have been told is CarQuest is owned by Napa. The store manager showed me that their filters are from WIX(his billing invoice) with the Carquest logo.
Like everything else I'm sure MOOG is outsoursing .

That's my exact thoughts as well. These are going on my Ram and I plan to drive the dog $hit out of it. I really don't want these to fail while driving as it will see quite a bit of track time too.

But still charging a premium price.

I don't take issue with your statement, except that a part "made for a private label" by Moog DOES NOT (example) make it a Moog part

MANY private label products are made to less exacting tolerances/ materials, etc, than the original brand

AND THIS HAS BECOME MUDDIED with "big box" store "Branded" products. Such things as John Deere lawn tractors and Lincoln welders bought at Lowes and other box stores ARE NOT truely their namesake "under the hood."

I ran across this YEARS ago with both Sears and the then Wards

Bought a brand new RCA TV from Wards. One reason I bought it was because IT SAID RCA and not "Wards Silvertone" or whatever.

38 Seconds after the warranty expired, so did the tuner. I was going to fix it myself, but IT TURNS OUT the tuner was built under a special contract to Wards and WAS NOT SERVICED by RCA

Same thing, Sears lawnmower, Tecumseh engine. The carburetor on the damn thing was made under contract to Sears, and Tecumseh knew NOTHING about the carb.

And nowadays, it's worse.

sure you do, you either have the invoice that they emailed you, or you have the credit card/bank account/paypal records

I actually think I will send them back and get my money back since mad by Moog for Carquest doesn't make them Moog quality. Looking online real Moog items have Moog and the part number stamped into them where the grease fitting goes. These do not and are made completely different then the actual part Moog puts in boxes with their name on them.

Hell yes send them back and wait til you get home when you can really see what you're getting before you buy them. Thanks for the heads up on this so we know 'Moog' doesn't necessarily mean good quality anymore.

If they were in Moog boxes they would more then likely be a petter product since as stated their parts that they put in their boxes are going to be better quality then the parts they put in say well Carquest. I wouldn't be irritated in this except I bought them as MOOG not made by Moog for Carquest. He never mentioned in his ad that they were Carquest.

They are made BY Moog to lower standards for CarQuest. Moog stamps or casts "MOOG" in every one of their top line products. The bottom line is that if MOOG is not on the part, it is not a first line Moog product. Another thing to be careful of is, you will see online vendors such as Rock Auto. They will list several different parts for one application at different prices. Often, you will see a Moog part number by a very inexpensive part. This is NOT a Moog part. Many vendors will use the Moog part number when their product isn't made by Moog. If it's Moog, it will NOT be the cheapest part. I guess the bottom line for me is don't be a cheap *** when buying front end parts. That would be akin to buying the cheapest airplane wings you could find.

I am not related to or affiliated with Carquest in any way shape or form but in defense of their parts being cheap, As the Superintendent of a large Public Works Dept. here in Mo. I have 3 full time mechanics that work for me and we take care of police, fire ,ambulance, and all park's and street dept. vehicles and equipment and we use Carquest parts and have little to no problem's with any of the part's and if and when a problem does happen they back everything 100% So with that being said if you yourself definitely want quality Moog parts then you should get exactly what you want, but as for me I wouldn't be afraid to use any quality Carquest part on any of my vehicles ,maybe save a couple dollars here and there to put in the gas tank and know that I still will have great part with an excellent warranty. JMO

I like carquest parts but here in canada you definatly don't save by going to carquest. they always have the part but its usually 2 times more then the other parts places. if you need it in a rush carquest is the place to go, if you want it cheap don't bother calling them!

I used to be an assistant manager for Car Quest, and an ASE certified repair tech. In terms of parts, CQ is now starting to slip. But, like NAPA, all parts are reboxed from other suppliers. If you buy Carquest branded there should be two price levels. One is the cheaper imported stuff, the other is Moog. My Neon's lower control arm/ball joint assembly is a Moog part, but it was bought at "the Quest". I've been using those exact chassis parts for years. You have to ask for Moog, and they are more money. But the parts are fine. Night and day better than any of the other stuff. I've got 6-7 full front ends redone with all CQ/Moog parts running around. No problems with boots, wear, of general ugliness. Oh, and I'm 99.99% sure NAPA does not own Car Quest.

i was reading awhile back that moog pulled their stock from carquest a few years ago. At least in Canada it was true. (i assumed in the U.S. it was the same)
Even the local Carquest could not get moog part #'s but had the carquest brand (i was looking for the problem solvers from moog)
I went to rockauto.com and specifically ordered the moog parts and they came in with moog boxes and moog stamped everywhere you looked.

The problem solver are the ones I am going to buy also. I have read nothing but good for actual Moog boxed items. I really don't want to do this again in the next 14 years.
