Hey all, here is a nice Carter AVS. The stamp pad has been ground down...for whatever reason, I don't know. Appears to be in really nice shape.

$60 plus the ride from Ontario

Thanks
Steve

there is one reason id #s are ground off.but on a carb, makes no sense

it was re-manufactured at one point in its life ....not sure why but when they re-man they grind the numbers off.

I have three different TQs that are re-manufactured and still in the boxes and each one ground down the exact same way.

I wish they wouldn't do that because its easy to lose track but that is why it is

I agree Rani, the carb is in good shape, so Im banking that it has been rebuilt, only plausible reason(Lord knows why) why the numbers would have been ground off.
Ive no need for it as I found orig carb for Dads cuda. I have enough spare stuff kicking around that has to go this is one of many...

Cheers
Steve

68-69 340 or 383 engine used the 1 7/16 primary. Then in 71' for sure the 440 did as well on the 4966s LP carb. Some 70's did too. without the top vent, it is likely a pre-70. With the horizontal air fuel screws, it is likely a 69'. 68's had the screws at a 45 degree angle.

Thanks for the info!

The dual mixture screws and open bowl vent indicate that it is most likely a 69, but could possibly be a 68 (most 68s had a single air bleed screw for idle with plugs in the mixture screw holes).

Why numbers were ground away ? A good clue is in the long list of numbers that a single rebuild kit covers.
Just one example... 67 273 Commando AFB standard number for automatic transmission build is 4295. C.A.P. number 4305S. The single difference between these 2 carbs is stops at mixture screws that limit their travel in the C.A.P. 4305S.
To force the screws past those stops will damage them. To take the carb completely apart and rebuild it requires properly removing those stops.
So... After the rebuild the carbs were offered for exchange. Customer would balk at mismatched numbers. Solution was too simple.
I guess I should ad There were 2 more numbers for the manual trans build carbs that had slightly different sized jetting. The rebuilders could ignore that aspect of their replacement carb, rebuild and provide whatever they had to work with.
