Again, thanks for helping on the back brake set-up, now for the front. I have 11" discs on front that run 5 on 4. Want to change to 4.5, The rotors do not look like the dodge truck I have, it looks like the rotor and hubis one piece ...can this be so and if not. how do the separate. Later

The two piece hub/rotor is sort of swedged together with the knurled part of the studs. The newer castings for the 73 up 4.5" bp are one piece and are not separable.

What is swedged and how do you separate a swedged hub and rotor?

I need to in the spring and I do not know how.

There is a thread here about swapping on mustang rotor's.They have the 4.5' pattern and can be made to work by playing with bearing sizes. If you have a KH 4 piston setup the hub and rotor are separate, wheras the mustang rotor is unicast or one piece.

swedged is where they install the wheel stud it is cylindrical with knurl's on it after it is all together they have a tool to swedge it which makes it look kinda like an hour glass to keep the part's together permanently so if the wheel falls off the rotor won't also fall off,I guess they think we have enough on our hands lookin for the wheel and the lugnut's and don't want us to have to look for the rotor hat also which is also held in place by the caliper.but if you think lookin for them lugnut's is a pain in the :bootysha: try lookin for one of them tools to un-swedge the wheel stud's to get that sucker apart,or the tool to re swedge the new wheel studs if you get that sucker apart

Swedging/ Swadging sp? in this case would be using the studs to form a tight fitting hole in the rotor/hub to connect all of the pieces. I`m not sure of the spelling, I`m pretty certain it`s wrong but I hope you get the idea. You can remove the pieces by pressing out the studs but you`ll need to start back with fresh studs to get a tight fit when rebuilding the old assembly.

So I need 2 special tools made of unobtainium?
And I assume I need to have special knowledge to be able to use said tools?

Is there a better option? Like drilling/cutting them apart, getting new rotors, and using a different lug stud?

At this point I need to address the brakes, and I do not really care if the rotor falls off with the wheel, if the wheel does fall off somehow.

Like needsaresto pointed out you can use a 67 Mustang rotor for the big bolt circle (they`re unicast) but they have to be machined to work.

I took a set apart with a brass drift and BMFH but it was a PITA. You`ll still have to get new studs and reinstall them without damaging your parts. You may be able to pull the studs through with an impact wrench using an inverted lug nut over a large washer.

I use the same technique but with two flat washers and never sieze compound and when it get's tight I flip it over and give a good whack with hammer and drift to keep from pulling the threads, and yea it is a p.i.t.a. royal one to get the old studs out

Can you press them out?
Or possibly heat the rotor/hub up first to make it easier?

You should be able to press them out but make sure you have something behind it surrounding the stud to prevent bending the material around it. I wouldn`t recommend heat on the parts unless they`re going to the scrap bin.

There isn't another hub that will fit these cars?
(I know, probably not a new idea/question)

Is the 10 inch drum spindle the same as the disc spindle?

Can I not remove the rotor and hub with caliper and replace the assembly with a rotor and hub from a later model. That way I hope to have the hub, rotor and caliper all separate....

The spindles are different on the later model stuff, so if you wanted to change to the large bolt pattern using the later A-body stuff you would have to get it all including the single piston calipers. The only other thing you can do is go with the Mustang rotor and have it machined to fit.

OK, based on all of this info, how about these options:

1) For those who have drum and want disc:
Get a pair of 10" drum spindles, buy the SSBC brake kit; OR
Get a donor disc set up from a 73 up.

2) For those who have KH and want to end the BS:
Get a pair of 10" drum spindles, buy the SSBC brake kit; OR
Get a pair of 10" drum spindles, and based on the link below, it appears the key to the SSBC kit is the spacer bushing and the caliper bracket.

So, the big questions are:
1) Can the spacer bushing be bought or duplicated if you had the skills, or knew someone who did?
2) Would the existing KH caliper bracket work?
3) Would the existing KH calipers work? (I believe the KH caliper and the SSBC caliper look the same, but they are not).

I have a feeling the answers are all no. The more I think about it I think I am leaning towards getting a set of 10" drum spindles and the SSBC kit.
