charcoal canister removal

Hi guys. So I am removing the canister from my 75 Scamp, and the only line still connected is the fuel vent line coming from the fuel tank. Any thoughts on how far back to cut it and should it bend unward, or does it not even matter? I was thinking of cutting it a couple feet away from the fuel tank. Should I just leave it open?
 
You might get alot of opinions on this some will say you should keep it, I got rid of mine in the 80's, I capped off the vent line at the tank. my lines were all rusted out so I replaced the fuel line with a 3/8 inch SS line and sending unit, and then drilled a small hole in my gas cap under the lid, but I haven't had any issues maybe i am just lucky.
 
Yeah.

1 Why remove it if it is all there, all hooked up, and works?

2 Drilling a hole in the cap is NOT the way to vent one of these, and invites fuel spillage

(Earlier cars all had a vent at the top of the fuel filler tube, came up to top of the quarter, then down the filler pipe and through the trunk floor, dead -ended in the rear frame rail)

If you INSIST on this, leave the vent line there, you can use it for a vapor return system

My 74 has neither a charcoal canister or vent tube on the fuel neck. No problems

Probably because there's still an open line coming off the side of the tank that used to go to the charcoal canister. Since its no longer attached to the canister, its just another place for the tank to leak.

And if that line is securely capped, it just means there's a gasket or seal somewhere that's not doing its job. The tank has to be vented somehow to allow for vapor expansion and to keep from pulling a vacuum inside the tank as the fuel is pumped out.

While the charcoal canister isn't the most cosmetic solution to the problem, if everything is hooked up and working there's no reason to remove it. Otherwise, you have to come up with another way to vent the tank, since the fuel neck and cap aren't vented. Not to mention there's 4 lines on the side of the tank that you'll need to plug or re-route somehow to keep the tank from leaking if you fill it all the way to the top.
