... an A/F gauge is the best way to tune. You won't even have to pull the plugs except to verify the tune.

This is true if 'tuning' only involved the AFR. But timing effects and heat range matter too. So checking plugs is still something that needs to be done on a modified motor. Not just for performance, but longevity - who wants to keep swapping fouled or burnt out plugs every few hundred miles?
