Used the tool to adjust the linkage in neutral. What would be the correct way to fix my Hurst competition plus shifter?
After pulling it out of 3rd and back to neutral it hangs up moving shifter side to side.

you have to use a alignment tool then ajust the rods. I have used an allen wrench I forget the size if you alraedy did that it may be worn out?

Used the alignment tool, everything works peachy until I shift into 3rd (I can shift back into first and everything is back to lining up again). New linkage/bushings.
My thoughts were to either adjust the 3/4 rod 1 turn without the alignment tool (or the 1-2 rod) or tighten up the stop a little?

Did you verify the flag placement? Sounds like their is some slop and the a gear is not fully releasing.

If there's no slop in the shifter linkages, the right bushings in the right holes etc, there can be slop in the trans shift levers with either the nuts being loose, or wear in the shift levers themselves being sloppy on the trans.
Check for play/slop anywhere, use washers/whatever, - then go back and re-align the shifter rods back to "H", and try again.
Good luck.

I stopped using the line up tool in the mid 1980’s. You’ve already found it doesn’t always work.

From your drawing (if that’s actually what’s happening you need to lengthen the 1-2 shift rod, or shorten the 3-4 shift rod.

I almost always make the rod that is shorter longer. It doesn’t take much.

Make it a couple turns longer and then check it. If its still off go one turn until you get the gate lined up.
