We have just had a chance to get under the '74 Duster 318 car we picked up and I noticed that the rear end of this car has coil springs in addition to the leaf springs. I have never seen nor heard of this. Is this some add on that a prior owner installed to try to remedy the sadly drooping rear end or did the 74s have coils with the leaf springs. I want to get gome XHD or SS springs for the rear to lift it up but if I need to get some coils too I guess I need to know that. Thanks!!

I am assuming the coils are over the shocks. If so, they used to sell these as helpers to increase the load carrying capacity of the vehicle. They were quite often added to compensate for sagging springs or jack up the back of the car for tire clearance.

I assume that when we put on new leaf springs we get rid of the coils then? correct?

Sunny Beach.. Those coils will be gone. I thought it was weird looking. Thanks for the help
