Hi all about ready to pull the trigger on a 451 build with the 440 source kit. first Question. machine shop with dyno and mopar know how in the Portland Oregon metro area and 2nd Question good aluminum heads that will fit up to cppa headers this will be all street driven and only down the track once a year at wood burn. Much thanks

First I went to Andy F's company's website to see if he had any recommendations... If you aren't familiar with Andy

Andy has authored a long list of technical magazine articles for publications such as Popular Hot Rodding, Mopar Action, Mopar Muscle, Car Craft and Hot Rod. Andy has also written two books for CarTech publishing including How to Build Max Performance Mopar Big-Blocks, and Mopar B-Body Performance Upgrades 1962-1979.

Trust me, he knows...

Why wouldn't a 470+ not be reliable, 451 made sense before widely available aftermarket cranks, if I was gonna go bbm stroker I'd want more than you can already get with a bored out 440. A 470 has great bore stroke and rod ratios, but it's up to the OP what makes most sense to him.

A 470 has great bore stroke and rod ratios,
not as good as a 451 and the 451 has a lighter rotating assembly and perfect cubes for any OOTB aftermarket heads.
470 makes for a good tractor engine with undersized heads, I wouldn't bother building one with anything less than a Trick Flow 270 or Indy top end.

Try Somers Machine in Vancouver.

In the process of building a 451. Started on it many years ago.
I had a 230 cast 400 block machined at Eastco in Gresham many years ago with my 440 source rotating assembly. That shop closed.
Many years later I decided to have that block as well as another sonic checked. Yep. Backwards I know. Sonic check before spending several hundred on machine work.LOL
I went to Gray's automotive and had the blocks sonic checked. The owner was very nice and knowledgeable. I asked a lot of questions and he was very patient. I was not even a high paying customer.
I have the original 440 for a b body project. When the time comes I will contact Gray's. Or for other projects.
He does have a engine Dyno. He also had Ford and Chevys engines in different stages of machining and assembly.
McMinnville is not far from Portland.

Going from 451 to 470 ain't gonna operate at vary different powerband(rpm's), 500-540+ sure will make a big difference in rpm. What happened to no replacement for displacement lol :)

Nothing, cylinder heads are the limiting factor.
The factory head was too small for the 440, better suited for the 383 and 400.
OOTB aftermarket Chicom heads and even the Trick Flow 240 head are limited over 450 ci.

OP hasn't decided on heads far as I can tell, basically you put 500 hp (or whatever hp) parts on a 451 or a 540 you get around 500 hp but just at very different rpms, It all comes down to how much hp the OP wants and where he wants it (rpms). If the OP wants a 451 that's fine, I just couldn't spend the money to stroke an engine and only end up with a cid that I could make with an overbore 440, I'd at least go 470 but that's me, OP can do what he wants.

500 cube has least bob weight

Your right why not the 470. That will be talk about and other things with the engine builder the one mentioned from Mcminnville, or
Im pretty sure those guys at grays love the 470.
Hell Andy's 470 probably made em famous, I know it helped me decide on 470 cubes.
