Bought a 727 small block trans at the Carlisle show last week and would like some advise if possible. Trans code is PK4039537 5977 4061 from what I have researched over the last couple days is its from 1978 for 1977 Trucks??? (long shaft) It is a Chrysler re-man that has never been installed. It will be going behind a 318 engine#4006730-318-16 bored .060,light mopar cam, Edlebrock intake and 1406 4 barrel carb with Hooker performence headers. Going into a 72 Duster. Car will be just a driver, not for the track. The questions I have are.

1) Is this a non-lock up (see pictures) splines to the end of shaft.. Its not a lock up correct???

2) What Torque Converter would be good? looking at the B&M BMM10416 2000 stall from summitt or should I go with Hughes 2400 stall?

3)also need a flex plate. TCI Auto 145200 what I am looking at (any suggestions)

4) Tranny should fit and work for this project don't ya think????

I'll take any good advise.
Thanks. Bill

The tranny will fit and work, but the info needed on the stall converter is not present. You can not say light cam and get away with it. Please provide;

Cam spec or part number
rear end gears and tire size

The TCI part your looking at is a simple flex plate? They should have a description on it as to what exactly and how it exactly fits up to what your doing. Also knowing the bolt spacing on the converter would be MOST helpful before ordering. The converter has 2 different bolt sizes to attach it to 2 different spaced sizes,

You would think the factory would make things easier with forethought on 1 spaceing distance and bolt size, but, not here today. The aftermarket just follows suite.

On it beiong a lock up or not, I'm sorry to say I can not tell. *I* do not *think* theres a way to tell from the out side? But I do not know for sure. I heard someone say there a tube on the valve body? Or some crap like that. Truly, I do not know. Though I beileve, an actual truck trans are not LU units for the possible load it could carry. Again, this I heard and do not know about.

Just wait, someone who does will be coming along to school us on a LU or non-LU I.D.ing for the tranny.

According to the excellent book by Munroe, LU units had a 23 spline input with a machined area on the front which makes them look very much like a 4 speed input shaft, that is, a machined cylindrical nose

The biggest unforseen problem that you are gong to have is that the truck trannys didn't have the two mounting tabs for the floor shift bracket on the end of the tailshaft. Unless you are using a column shift this will be an issue that you will have to deal with.

The cam is a Mopar performance DCC-4452761 .450/.455" LIFT

It is column shift. But looks like the tabs are there if I am looking at correct tabs?

I have a 8 3/4 rear end for it 4" bolt pattern with 14" wheels that are mounted with L60's not sure what gears are in it yet. (non sure grip)

6 bolt crank

24 spline smaller shaft

27 on the larger

Thanks for all the replys so far..

You haven't said what this is going into.....year, make, model, race car, Sunday cruiser?

Sure I did.. :toothy7:
But happy to post it again.. 72 Duster. The one in the picture.. Car will be a cruiser.. Not for the track.

1. It's not a lockup type
2. The lower stall is better for the street
3. A stock flex plate is plenty strong enough and easy to find.
4. A 904 would be a better choice but since you already have the 727, go ahead and use it. The 904 is lighter and uses less horsepower than the 727 but is strong enough for street use in stock form.

Bill, that cam is as big as the stock 340 cam and as such, you need to run a converter at least similar to it and maybe looser since you have only a 318. Otherwise, your Duster will be one heck of a pooch from the get-go.

Can you drop the pan to see if it looks good inside? It may have been sitting for many years and may have some rust on the drums that could be an issue. I have had two or three factory remans apart and if they sat for a long time, it was good to have taken them apart and fixed the few minor issues from them just sitting.

Hey Tom. Thanks for your input.. What stall do you recommend? I will pull the pan and inspect.
