Well today I decided to open up the my spare 318 that I have in the stand. My plans were to take a look and see if everyting was ok possibly rering it and put it in my Swinger.

Well I pulled the heads and this is what I found. Now this is my first engine build but I don't think those missing chunks of piston aren't supposed to be missing. The cylinders look clean other than some slight surface rust, no score marks that I can see. So then if those pieces of the piston did crack off wouldn't the cylinder walls be scored to death??? It's only pistons 2,4,5, and 6. It doesn't seem like their notched from the manufacturer because some are bigger than the others. Cylinder 5 is the biggest.

Those notches are to show you which direction the pistons go in the cylinders.
They should all be facing the front of the block.

Yep, thats what my 318 and 360 pistons had when i stripped the motor. This gives you the oportunity to mark the rods correctly if you do decide to swap the pistons out as the rods are handed left/right for the different banks of the V8

I was thinking they were notches. They only thing was that they are different sizes but they are all facing the front of the engine. The other thing that concerned me was not all of them were, only half and the others weren't.

They might be miss matched pistons. I have seen some pretty shoddy work before from people that "think" they know what they are doing. "If these cars could talk, Imagine the stories we would hear". :)

I have decided to just rebuild the motor instead of rering it. I think it will save me a lot of headaches.
