I often struggle trying to keep the motor from turning over (torquing crank bolt, flywheel, flex plate) by sticking a bar or large screwdriver in places they don't belong. I had my local fabricator/welder make me up a tool to take care of that task for me under most circumstances. However, when I got the tool home, I found we forgot all about providing a hole so I can tighten the crank bolt to specs (see photo #1). The remedy will be to cut out a 2 1/2" hole in the tool (should work better with that modification) (see photos #2 & #3).

Rope trick.

Pick a cyl pull the spark plug

find tdc on that cyl

Back off 1/4 turn

Feed cotton cord into the cyl

Rotate back toward tdc.


Cyl compressed the rope.

Engine no longer turns over
 
I made one out of piece of scrap 3 inch angle iron that I cut a notch out of for a crank socket and welded a flat bar to. It's crude, primitive, catches three balancer bolts, and is about as pretty as a mud fence. But it works!
 
I put a deep socket in one of the balance holes and run the crank until it hits the block. Doesn't help with the pan on.
