Came from a mid 60's 6 wheel drive backhoe. The owner got a running poly for it from a salvage yard. I was asked if I wanted it, so I thought, why not? I was curious to see how these were put together.

Awesome score, free is my favorite acquisition$ !! You could send that to MCG to
put in an upcoming issue, esp. if you can get more background on when and how
long those were produced etc. .
So what are your plans for this crusty poly-jewel ?:):)

Did you find any sign of why the poly stopped running before the mouse invasion?

Being an industrial engine, I bet you dollars to doughnuts that is what's referred to as an extended service block. In other words, it can be bored over a good bit. I bet it will go 4" without looking back. Plus, the 4" small block stroker crank is a direct drop in. Instant 402" Poly.

Stout and torquey.

Look at that beautiful "semi Hemi" valve layout.....

Ohhhhhh..... 402......Ahhhhhhhh.....

Free is always good and I do love the 318A motor. Those bores look...sporty lol. I bet it can still be bored out quite a bit depending on where it is at right now as RRR said. Tear it apart, send it out to be tanked and see how it looks. I could not have a free engine in my garage, it would magically drain my bank account and end up rebuilt and then I would have to find a car to put it in lol.

A 4" bore and stroke poly sounds freakin cool! I better not think too far into it right now as too not spend all that green, would like to pay off the house first ha. I was thinking the only engines that I would consider swapping into my 83 W150 slant 4 speed would be an early hemi or a poly to match or exceed the cool factor of the slant at roll-ins. Been soaking the poly in penetrating oil every other day and only have one rod cap left to remove, still stuck, and the cam and lifters still don't want to move much. Most every thing elso is off though.

Getting less crusty and more penetration! That sounds bad I know.

Every thing looks to have been in place, the bearings were scored a bit, and the front main bearing looked to be starting to rotate. The connecting rods are in one piece. The owner of the backhoe bought this from a guy because it is just like the one his father used to use in their family buisiness-dirtwork, tiling, tree removal, etc. in the past. Said to have sat in the same spot for at least 20 years before he got it. I am guessing water got into it while sitting, not sure if there was a carb on it over that time.

That block will also accept any small block head if cammed for it....

Finally got the crank and pistons out used two cans of penetrating oil to get this far. I found out my first failure point. Cylinder #1 has a bent connecting rod.

Bent connecting rod so maybe coolant leak into cylinder? Head gaskets look to have been replaced before.

Yup. Hydrolock. Almost guaranteed. But that's a good thing. Probably means not much else is hurt.

Oh and one more thAng. Those valve covers are RARE. You really need to keep them in as good a shape as you can.

You could use a newer snowmobile ? That thing looks like it's had it's day ! :poke:
:D I put over 250 miles on that old 1983 Polaris Indy 440 since I bought it for $150 in January. Rebiult the carbs, cleaned out the tank, ran new fuel/oil lines, cleaned the mouse nest out of the fan cooling shroud, and put a windshield on it. I have a habit of making old stuff work it seems.
