Cuda Al’s Great Adventure

Your pix are invoking many fine memories. Wait till you see the bridge in Astoria! It is a monster. I used to lecture in Astoria once a year as a guest speaker for Oregon State. I have driven all over those roads! We lived in Corvallis /Eugene area.
This is my 11th trip to Astoria in the last 9 years, I can’t even count the number of times I have crossed that bridge. The first was in 2011 when my brother moved to Astoria.

This is the first time I’ve taken the Barracuda on my trip to visit. I did take the Barracuda on a road trip into Oregon in 2009, before my brother left California.

Trip over to Wildcat is a good day trip from Astoria. There’s another yard in the Vancouver area but they mostly have the old stuff. Vanessa at Wildcat aswell asEd, the owner are good people.
well heck darn I didn't know you were going to be that close to my neck of the woods you probably passed right by my house on the way to Wildcat Auto Wrecking. I was out in the garage all day today working on the Duster. I like Wildcat and Ed is pretty cool will you still be here next week for the big swap meet? In Portland at the track and at the Expo Center? I have a booth on the track..

Also just an FYI the last Sunday of the month an a body group meets on 92nd and Southeast Stark just off the 205 freeway from noon to 3pm..

How about a map? My last trip to Oregano was awful on I-5. Looks like you were able to avoid 101 after getting north of the Golden Gate. Friends in Roseburg.

I have taken all of 101 from downtown Los Angeles to Port Angeles Washington and Olympia.
After my first couple trips to visit my brother I stopped taking I-5, heck I don't use the 5 even on local trip, it might as well not exist.

Normally I do not take a road trip this early, weather will most likely dictate the return trip as well.

As I mentioned earlier Wildcat is worth a visit if you get a chance. I see on your route youbypassed Roseburg. Might want to pay a visit to Accurate Ltd. Mopar exhaust. Tom Swope is the owner. Nice guy. Worth checking them out.

Oh, by the way, more pics....

I have been to Accurate and Wildcats is the wrong direction (and I'm not looking for anything)
This trip was to visit my brother which I do once or twice a year. This is the earliest I have gone (normal is mid April to late October) and I was set on taking the Barracuda, weather was a factor on the route there and back, just Thursday I saw that Caltrans had plows out on I-5, may have been lite cleanup but I didn't want to take a chance and backtracked the 101.
One evening I took my niece out and let her drive the car, she thought it was fun but very different, you have to drive the car.

After my visit (and 4 days of slave labor) I hit the road this morning, first stop was at Sunset Beach in Warrenton Oregon for some pictures, a little early so the sun was low, still cool.

Surprisingly there wasn't a lot of traffic, the slide may have had something to do with it. These are all take on US-101

Speaking of the slide, I chose to stay on the highway and idle through the gravel if I had to, it was flagged and paced. probably less than half a mile.

Somewhere south of Crescent City I needed to stop a clean the windows, might as well take some pictures. I needed a break anyways.

A little further south.

I had another detour planned but my notes were wrong so I missed the turnoff, another trip.

Gas Report:
First fill (half the tank from the way north)
171.3 miles 16.01 mpg (some mountain driving)
192.0 miles 18.92 mpg (some traffic in a couple towns)
134.2 miles 20.39 mpg (good as cruise control)

Alan

Final trip total 2255 miles with an overall average of 17.54 mpg

The day started in Fortuna and pretty quick you are in the redwoods, as mentioned previously the Avenue of the Giants is a worthy diversion, for the most part it follows the Eel River.

On the way home I tried to see if I could get a good read on a highway MPG, Once I thought I was clear of traffic and basically on open highway I stopped and topped off, did my best to cruise, go figure one of the worst tanks? 17.43, I guess 70 mph is not optimum.

Weather I take the Barracuda or my truck people ask me why I don't fly, it's quicker, cheaper. I'd say read this a couple times and ask me again. The car even filthy as it is would always get comments at stops and thumbs up on the highway. The funny part is I didn't see this as taking a classic car on a road trip but more taking my car and not the truck. Would I take it again? heck yea! Just probably not this early in the season. These trips are always more about family but I do what I can to enjoy getting there, even if it is a route I have taken before.

WOW Hats off to you Sir,
Not too many folks will tackle a trip like that let alone with a 50 plus yr old car. Wow WOW WoW !

Now I know where you been and haven't replied to my emails lol. Regardless, this trip's story was fascinating ...Im sure Ernie H. couldn't have said it any better.

MAPS

P.S. You ask me, GYC lost out on a great meet, his loss. If he truly was a Mopar Fan and knew what where and with what you were doing it in it would have put his restos to shame. Looks are not everything with classics, reliability is just as important.
Congrats !

Worman is a big shot, too good to rub elbows with the underlings If you had been Goldberg he would have fallen over himself to get out to see you. It’s about the money

Thanks for sharing! Cool trip. Too bad so many old Mopars are totally rebuilt with the best parts, and never go past the local burger joint!?? Road trips are fun, especially in a car you know is good!

I'm always planning, looking for different places to see, I say I'm scouting for places that I might like to spend some time at.

These are all different trips that I have taken to visit my brother, I generally take 2-4 days up and 2-4 days back. I try to take routes I have seen, as you can see it is getting more difficult. I may start using the Barracuda on these trips, no AC so that might play into the timing or weather I take the car or my truck.

The run into Montana was a Fly-n-Buy 1969 Polara
The run to Flagstaff started in SoCal and continued into Oregon.
I usually zoom into one of the voids and see whats there, I'm looking to eastern Washington and Idaho more and maybe Vancouver BC.
The further out I get the less time I have for sightseeing or visiting family, there is still a lot of stuff within those voids.

Thank you for sharing your journey, I admire you for taking your classic on a road trip, and enjoying it the way it was meant to be. Far too many people don't get the opportunity to have that kind of experience, they're too afraid of something happening to the car, or breakdowns. Sure, anything can happen, but these old cars are so much simpler to fix, no computers or myriad of sensors to malfunction, gotta enjoy them, otherwise why have them? I took my green '70 from Vancouver B.C. to Winnipeg Mb. in February, through mountain passes, snowstorms, whatever the road threw at me. Between the horribly uncomfortable seat and a plugged heater core, it was a trip I enjoyed and will remember for many more years to come. That was in 1992, and I had only had the car for a few months, probably had only driven it no more than 3000 miles in total by then.

By 2005 I had completely restored/modified it, and drove over 5200 miles in 2 weeks on the Power Tour, met a ton of great like-minded people, got pictures of my car at the Daytona Superspeedway, and on the sand at Daytona Beach, saw Garlit's museum in Ocala Fla. drove through torrential downpours and stifling heat, construction zones, and made so many more memories, and look forward to doing it again before I die.

BRAVO!!! A road trip in an old car is something everyone should do. You cant/dont want to speed for hours on the freeway and it encourages you to take the more scenic paths. IMO you see more and its certainly highlights the adventure of the trip more than just the destination. No arm rests and no upholders make for a nostalgic trip.

That color looks amazing.

having driven a 67 barracuda 2200miles in one trip before i have some questions... pft "broken fuel gauge" i know why you stopped... ;-)

1) You apparently at least have some decent quality seat foams. OEM short back seats are terrible after a while, worse with old foam. 2200 miles, 1900+ of them were talking about what other seats i can install.
2) did you find that spot where you can jam your foot 'just so' between the pedal and the tunnel? That makes my foot cramp thinking about it.
3) you apparently have your window frames adjusted pretty good. ;-) Do you have any "de-rattle/de-noise" or general roadtrip checklist tips?

This is a 10 year old restoration, the car has its share of noises, halfway there I added a spring to my throttle return as the throttle would only back off to a fast idle, so a heavy throttle. With a functioning gas gauge I might have stretched a leg or two but I needed stretch my legs, no complaints. The seats are as comfortable as my truck (99 F250SD), never felt comfort was an issue. Only checklist was to check fluids and load tools/parts.
