Dash switch nut removal

I just use a blade screwdriver and use a small hammer to get it started coming off, if you do it lightly you won't mar the chrome...
 
You can also use a snap ring pliers.

Get a tool for the nut. Most of the time the other ways mentioned just mark the nut, scratch the dash and cut your fingers. Spray some penetrant around the inside of the nut a few hours or a days before starting he,os also.
 
1/2 inch drive, 1/2 inch cheap Taiwan socket. Put in vise, use good crosscut bastard file. If you position top of socket about 1/10 inch above vise jaws, this will guide your file. Ink-Mark spots (2 mm wide is about all) in center of socket that you want to keep , and file towards them. Keep filing until they fit trim ring notches,
Push away from you to make file cutting strokes, do not pull towards you, it dulls file.
