I had it happen sort of like that before. It turned out to be the power supply inside the computer going out. It would get hot and shut down. i hope the solve the issue for you. Dell is usually pretty good about it once you get to talk to someone here in the U.S.

mine did the same and i bought this power pack has never done it again

My Gateway had a similar problem. Kept shutting down. Sometimes it would shut down before it was through booting up. Ended up ruining the hard drive. Gateway said it needed an upgrade flash to the bios. Was fixed under warranty.

Gawd, I love wiring spaghetti!!!! Let me ask you this, by "shutting down", be more specific, verrrrry specific as to what it does. what is your operating system? is the system in an area of decent airflow? as someone else mentioned, are the fans working?

you can download a program called "speedfan" that monitors the temps on the motherboard for most systems, also looks @ your hard drives and can look @ the s.m.a.r.t. data from the disk and tell you the general health of the hard drive.

Is the system just powering off, or does it blue screen crash?? If blue screen, when you boot it up, look @ the event log with event viewer and see if there is anything in there that could be pointing to a failure.

Oh, here is the link to the download of speedfan:

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Just under the header "download" is a blue "speedfan 4.0" just click on that, download it, install it, and look @ your temp sensors and fan speeds.

Hope this helps

I'm instantly reminded of the dad plugging in his new Leg Lamp Award in A Christmas Story ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt

godfather, I won't be any help with your problem but did want to say I enjoyed our phone call the other morning. It was great to talk with you!

Good luck with the crisis. These guys will help you get through it.

If I have my laptop on for more than 5 hours it starts acting funny and frezing up. If it is colder out I can stay on longer.

If you are in a dusty environment or have pets the laptop's ventilation can get clogged causing it to overheat and shutdown. If the service tech did not replace the thermal grease when he reassembled it, this can cause this also cause this to happen.

Dell is pretty good with thier teck support. Most seem to be India though.Sometimes real hard to understand, allthough I did get one gentleman who was educated in Caimbridge and had an indian/english accent.

One word about Dell printers.

DONT buy one! You CANNOT get ink anywhere but Dell for them and it's a total rip off!

Dells are good when they are running but when warranty is out their teck support

sucks, even if you pay for it. If I were you I would buy a extended warranty if I
bought one

Everyone running a laptop should be using a cooler. It plugs into a usb port and is just a thin plastic box with fans in it. It helps keep your laptop much cooler. My wife's laptop would also shut off if it got hot. this may or may not be your problem. Good luck.
