Let us know if it helps. Even with the alternator disconnected, the lights shouldn't flicker and such. You should be able to run fine just off a fully charged battery for 30 min or more. You may need to get a multimeter and check for excessive voltage drops throughout your system. 4 awg wire sounds like amazing over-kill. I think 12 awg was the largest factory wire other than for the starter. Don't be too quick to grab the hammer.
