Dextron VS FA

In the interest of continued derailment of the thread while still being slightly relevant... there's no 'T' in Dexron.

Just sayin'.

Good call, I'm gonna go ahead and toss out those previous posts of mine to get the thread back to where it was. Sorry about that Jeff!

Seems Adam as usual, is closest to correct The only difference between the current + Mopar trans fluids is the base stock. +3 uses a conventional GpII base, and +4 is a semi-syn GpIII base. They have the same add packs, blended to meet the Chrysler 7176E spec. They are basically interchangeable, +4 just lasts longer and runs cooler. Despite being alot cheaper in recent years, +3 is not available anywhere I've been in the past year or so, so it's really a moot point.

You can run +3, +4, DexIII, the new DexIV, or even TypeF in the older 727-based autos. They will all work fine, not hurt anything, just behave a little differently. You'll get smoother shifts but more heat with the + fluids. Dexron II/III was the original factory fill. DexIV would be the technically correct best substitute, but cost the most. It'll shift crisply and being a GpIII based oil, last long and run cool. Run TypeF if you want the firmest possible shift and change it more frequently.

John Cope (CRT transmissions) and Chris Andrews (Andrews Racing Trans) each recommend ATF+4.

ATF+4 replaced 7176 and ATF+3.

I have used every fluid know to man in my TF and never had a problem. Just dont mix them and your fine. ATF+4 is synthetic so its not cheap.

I called john at cope and he told me not to use ATF 4 because it was synthetic and that he use to recc. ATF 3

I havent spoken with John in years but he was using +4 for awhile. Either way, Like I said use what your comfortable with. No matter what you use someone is going to recommend something else.

Type F was highly recommended to me by the transmission specialist who beefed up my 727 that I had yrs ago so that's what I used.

ATF+4 at one time was only available through Chrysler dealership (it was high) but it is now available at WalMart. I have to use it in my 03 Dodge Ram.

If you can still find Dextron !!! it is a type A/Mercon fluid. I run the racing clutches and that is what John said is the best fit. I was looking into even the very costly type 6 full allison synthetics etc.

Also I went with Penzoil. All the new Valvoline fluids smell and look a little burned out of the bottle. Anyway John had mentioned that and I too noticed in the past year Valvoline fluids smell funky.

Yeah whatAdam said OK with it it is your call, but I think atf3 or better and bottom line is not burned, keep it cool and change often or within reason if you drive the hell out of it or have a very high stall convertor. it is mainly the heat that hurts the fluid. i think all modern fluids are pretty good for the most part. I know that only a few of the newer mopar and Toyotas have to have the specialty fluids, and the allisions have to have that very costly full syn blends or they burn up. But on a 904 or 727 as Joe and Adam said you will be fine. These guys and me included all run them for years with no real issue. I have been racing and building these things or about 32 years and ran F i nthe old days but I think that was in the past when the parts and fluids were much diff than today.
