come with 2.02 valves? going to look at some heads and the guys says they are casting number
3418815 w/2.02 valves. says they are j heads. could this be correct? if so what is a ballpark value
on them, if they are what he says? sure condition means everything but if complete, how much? tia

Those would be #3418915 heads. They would have 1.88 intakes unless they are AAR heads according to the book.

68-69 casting ending with 894 are 202 valves usually X on the heads. 70-71 casting ending with 915 are 202 valves Can be J, U, O, Z. The U's are usually cut off by the spark plug making them look like a backwards J, 1972 casting ending with 915 are 188 valves usually J,U,.

If the heads need to be redone, Valve guides, Seats, Valves, resurfacing, Springs, pressure tested. the cost can get up to the same as new heads.

Beware of old heads you never know what you are buying until you take them to a Machine shop. $300 max for a clean unrusted set with the springs off to check the valve guides to make sure they can at least be lines without new guides being installed. Remember these heads are 50 years old. I can use old heads them because my son does them for free for me. Customers usually opt for new heads due to the cost of labor and parts for reconditioning the old heads. Unless your building a original car and its what you want.

We get several heads in the shop that were said to be good and ended up being junk.

I've seen some slightly inconsistent info but I believe they transitioned from 2531894 heads to 3418915 in or around 1970-'71 so certain ones did have 2.02" intakes for 340s while staying with 1.88" for 360 applications. Casting dates can provide more clues. As Mike pointed out, 915 heads were also used on 340-6 T/A & AAR E-bodies. Chrysler did have a very early run of 894 heads with offset pushrod holes but I believe that was an early run for the Trans-Am series and didn't make it onto production cars. (Another member has some photos!)

i did go look at them and the casting number is 915 as as been said above. here are some pics that ia took. did not make an offer yet as i don't want to screw him or myself. he has another pair of 915 castings that appear to take a smaller valve. here are 4 pics i took. been on this shelf for 5-6 years he said. 1 head says c and other d behind 915. thanks again. just need to figure out if i will/do need them or not. i got lots of bb stuff and lots of magnum stuff and need to downsize. so not sure if i need these but hate to pass if someone can use them. i understand what you are saying steve about pulling a valve spring to check guides.

Put a straight edge across the top of the valve stems. That will tell you how far the Exhaust valves sunk in the heads. That is usually a good sign of mileage on them and how long they were in use with unleaded fuel .

Those appear to have 2.02 valves.

Thanks Steve. Makes sense. I found a couple sets of 587 castings with no valves, springs or anything. Not sure what the app for them are.

Thanks rusty. No measuring device here. Not even a tape measure.
If you look at the space between the valves, that's a give away. If there's very little room between the valves......as in your pictures, then you have 2.02 intakes.

1.88 would have a gap between the valves. 2.02 will almost touch the exhaust valve.
