What irks me about those kits is the direct frictions are stock thickness when they don't need to be. The oem fibers are grooved and thicker by about .025 to absorb heat. The red eagle direct clutch kits that use 5-6 frictions use the thinner forward frictions. You shouldn't use oem forward frictions in the direct clutch because they can't take the heat. Figure the forward clutch applies at idle, whereas third gear comes in at 4-8k. So; 4 frictions in the direct is really overlooking the weak point in the unit.

It's very informative asfaras means and methods of adding clutch plates to the direct drum, types of materials, and clearances. It's overkill for most applications, but it gives an idea of what is actually available over the 3-4 plate clutch.
