It depends on what is wrong. You might have an older, less capable alternator

You might have high resistance in the output line.

Many people believe instant gratification is a Denso injection...........

Frankly, "back when" I drove these cars, it never mattered. Never.
 
Yeah, "that's pretty normal" with these cars even when everything is "good". Since you don't idle all the time, the battery does get charged.
 
Yup, pretty common with the old girls. Sometimes just a minor idle adjustment will help some, as long as it doesn't bang going into Drive or Reverse.
 
It is actually normal with almost any older system even with a moderate output alternator, and even new systems to some degree. It just shows that the battery is supporting part of the electrical load when the alternator speed is low and its output drops. If you have a new system with a voltmeter, and the voltmeter is showing lower voltage at idle after the battery is well charged up, then the exact same thing is occurring..... you just don't have an ammeter to make it obvious.
