Do think three "unrestored" A-Bodies are worth $175K?

what perterbs me is those cars are not only "unrestored" they are dismantled as well

if they were just unrestored but intact they would be a better value but no someone has to hack into them then try to get their money back because they give up

they make it very difficult for the car to be put back unless you find a barracuda expert so basically those cars will become parts or crushed unless someone who is an expert buys it. but nobody who knows those cars will pay that much money so THREE nice abodies are probably going to bite the dust now

but aside from that, if you tell anyone selling anything that their price is too high it's either to start haggling or if you are not haggling then you are wasting their time they will probably cuss you out

anyways his cars are probably worth $2500 for the rusty one, $15-20K each for the ones with body panels replaced so maybe $42.5 for the lot IF the panels were welded on correctly.

To answer the question, "Do you think three "unrestored" A-Bodies and worth $175k?", in a short answer - No. I would also offer that someone who posts these cars on eBay without even one picture is also not very interested in selling, either. I suspect he is testing the waters to see if there are people in the market who are chasing something like these cars at some point down the road, perhaps trying to rationalize or prioritize which one gets attention first, or where to possibly spend the most attention, and more importantly $$. I am not convinced that these three, finished with an eye for correctness, would fetch close to that asking price.

First, let me just say that these cars are not mine. I know of them, and I have a good idea of what the eBay seller is attempting to do. He is letting folks who track some of rarer ones know that he has them, and where to find them eventually down the road. The price is actually prohibitive to the sale, but it does get folks talking and some free marketing exposure to the car(s), whether good, bad, or indifferent.

The 1969 383 convertible is a work in progress (and certainly the most rare and likely most valuable in completed form of the three). It does have a buildsheet, and the drivetrain has been rebuilt. It is an automatic car. The 383 is also an auto not one of a few as posted in the ad, but 1 of 272 1969 383-S autos (if memory serves), but according to the seller seems to be the one closest to being finished, needing only an exhaust (Accurate and/or ECS should have good candidates for a stock build, though ECS is still about 6 months out from being finished).

The last car is a car that was for sale here from a while ago, and here are pictures of it. I suspect it is in the exact same shape as it is seen here because it is still out the midwest. This is an A56 auto (one of 166) that is W1 with R6 interior and quite a few options on the fender tag and is a late April build car. It has inner fender liners, tach, AM/FM radio, rear defogger and some other cool things for a car that normally was a stripped down runner. Here are pics of it:

The other cars are mid to final restorations. All the hard to find parts are there, and progress is being made (these are not cars that have been abandoned due to lack of funds or interest, or both). Owner is dipping his toes in the water to see what is out there.

If you want BJ or Mecum money, take them to one of their venues once they are finished and make a weekend of it. I was shocked and surprised at this one fetched $47,300 with fees due to a general lack of attention to detail:

At the end of the day, cars are worth what someone is willing to pay. The ad seemed accurate for what they are, and the condition they sit today. Owner is not being disingenuous in his representation, but there is not a whole lot else to go on in the ad, either. They are all cool for different reasons, and each of the three mentioned via eBay all deserved to be finished IMHO.

Three 1968 Hemi survivor cars. Dart or 'Cuda. Take your pick, mix-n-match.

Outside of that or a 440 Dart maybe in the mix of hemis, hell no.

Were you "right" in what you think the cars are worth, i.e what the market will bring?
Yes.
Were you "right" in telling him.
Regardless of motive, the outcome of that is predictable.
Now, I would think the cars could not sold for that amount as they currently are.
Restored value is irrelevant, because:
1. They aint' restored.
2. Well, there isn't a number two.
So that is moot.

Why would you use a GTS to make a Hemi Dart clone? It would be the worst starting point with all the extra trim and options. Not to mention ruining a factory hipo car. You should be looking for as stripped of a slant or 318 car as you can find, and its easy to find them cheap.

What's your definition of "cheap"?

Just a quick search returned nothing I consider cheap.

I figured there was a misunderstanding there and you must have meant something like that. Taking a GTS and putting a 426 into it, but leaving all the extra GTS trim makes perfect sense if that's what you want. All I meant was why would you buy a $xx,*** GTS only to strip it down to turn it into a $x,*** regular stripped Dart to put a 426 in it, know what I mean? Totally non sensical.

And what I meant by cheap was relative to GTS prices. But aside from that, yeah, I see 67-69 Darts in real nice shape on this site quite frequently that I would consider to be pretty cheap... of course none of them are anywhere near me

I don't really watch ebay, just CL and this site.

thanks for your extensive post on the a-bodies recently listed on ebay for 175k.

i actually have the white fastback in my files - it was for sale about a year ago on one of the various "classic car" sites for, i believe $11,500. i was temperarily interested in the car because it had the plastic fender liners. i ended up finding and buying a set of those liners out in minnisota.

i would refer current "collectors" here on FABO to take a look at the results coming out of mecum's auction in dallas going on right now (sept 3-6). take a look at the 69 barracuda formula s lot T266. it is a VERY nice car and it sold today for $14k. given its condition, i think that was a very good price. however, look at all the muscle car prices in that auction. there are LOTS of great cars in nice shape which sold for between $15-25k. that says to me that the market on collector/muscle cars is either currently dipping or that there is a trend starting downward for these cars. heck, a BEAUTIFUL 69 corvette t-top 427 4sp just sold today for $25k! two or three years ago you couldn't TOUCH a 427 4sp corvette for less than $35k - maybe.

but again, i do agree with various comments here that everyone has the right to ask what they want for their cars. and maybe i shouldn't have contacted the $175 a-body guy "offering" my opinions. but if the results of mecum's auction going on right now is any barameter of where the muscle car market is or may be going, none of us will have to worry about spending hundreds of hours on restoring our cars. it may soon be cheaper to just go out and buy one already finished.

Likely the same car, very original. Good price in my opinion. Pre-auction price was much higher than what it went for...

Woodgrain wheel, A/C, power steering and looked like a rear defogger car as well. It is in the registry.
