do you MIND if I share?

i've just put myself on a high protein diet , low to no carbs . dessert is cottage cheese with a small taste of some flavored yogurt mixed in . so chicken breast , lean hamburger , sausage , for meat protein along with a half plate of veggies . not sure if it helps the brain , but it does change the waist line , lol . oh ya no bread or those high carbs for me anymore .

I’ve lost fifty three pounds by eating whatever I want but I only eat 1000 calories or less per day. I’m not very active and will be doing the same thing for 2025 and planning on dropping another fifty pounds this year.

I'm on a sea food diet...I see food, I wanna eat. "Fairly" active but if I could do it on less calories, that would be a big help.

probably a bad title for a MIND Diet but here goes:Brain Food for Mood, Memory, and Cognitive Function (The MIND Diet!)
no more than 5 pastries a week? I can have 2 or 3 as dessert in one meal!
Thanks for sharing. I didn't dig too deeply, but I didn't see where they explain why or how the "brain damaging" foods actually damage the brain. Obviously, fried foods and pastries are unhealthy if not moderated, due to fat and sugar content, but I'm curious as to the physiology behind their claim.

I understand they probably wanted to keep the list basic and simple, but they should specify grass fed beef, organic butter, and zero margarine. Margarine has no health benefits; it's essentially butter-flavored plastic.

I also wish they included the fact that brown rice contains higher levels of arsenic than white rice, so if someone eats a lot of it, something to consider. Yes, brown rice has more fiber and a lower glycemic index, but that doesn't make white rice unhealthy.

They suggest supplementing with melatonin, which I kinda disagree with. Yes, melatonin is a useful sleep aid when used occasionally, but it isn't something that should be used daily. Our brains produce the hormone melatonin naturally, and as with many hormone replacement or supplementations, you risk causing your body to stop producing that hormone on its own. Typically, the smallest melatonin tablet you can find is 3mg, which is more than 10x what the body produces daily. They make 5, 10, even 120(!!) mg tablets of melatonin. WAY overkill.

For sleep, I use magnesium, herbal teas with valerian root, and cannabis.

I have a culinary background with the last 6 years of that career in a nutrition-focused environment.

Congratulations!!! Keep it up -- getting the momentum is the hardest part of the health journey. Just make sure that eating whatever you want also means eating nutritious foods.

One more, before I get accused of writing a novel like AJ. I highly suggest everyone here gets a methylation test performed, if you can afford it. It's a simple cheek swab, and it's a one time test.

Almost half of our population has a genetic defect, affecting how our bodies metabolize certain substances and can impact many bodily systems from the cardiovascular system to our mood. Having a methylation test performed can tell you where your body may be lacking.

My body cannot process folate, so I take a methylated B complex daily. Since then it's like someone opened up the curtains from a dark room. Increased mood, energy, motivation, cognitive function, and clarity. Night and day difference.

I happened upon a conservative talk radio station years ago (now a latina station). And one guest was Dr Joel Fuhrman. He made sense to me, so I ordered his book. At that time my blood test cholestrol was 235. I started leaning the direction he suggested for couple months. I then had a physical exam coming up two months later, so I followed his program very seriously for that two months. My blood test cholestrol was 185. My doctor wanted to know what I had done.
Now for the bad part. I was on this journey completely on my own. My wife wasn't even willing to try, nor was anyone else in my family. That made it difficult to sustain. I would have to shop for my menu and my wife's. So all the crappie convenient foods were right there in front of me. If I could shop for only myself, the bad stuff would not be in my home.

This is a refrigerator magnet. I just now had to dig it out of a drawer. My wife doesn't want to see it.
I strayed over the years. At one of my physical exams with bloodwork, my doctor told me my thyroid wasn't working and he was going to put me on thyroid medication. I was kinda horrified. I refused, and said "Let me try something first." He told me that once you start thyroid meds, you're on them for life (like my sister). He said I needed a recheck after six months then. I got back on the program, had my recheck, and he said I was good to go.
Dr Furhman says animal products feed inflammation in your body. If I stay away from meats and dairy, my arthritis is nearly non existant. But if I eat a hamburger or steak, or consume dairy products, I can tell my arthritis cranks up, usually by the next day. Red meat and dairy are the worst offenders for me, both from cows. For me, chicken, eggs, or fish don't seem to be nearly as bad.
Everyone has to figure out what works for them.

I found that when I eat mostly veggies and fruits, and stayed away from processed foods which are jacked up with lots of sodium and sweeteners, the fresh veggies seem way more flavorful.

Of course, for years, I had read that processed foods were bad. But I didn't understand exactly what they were or why. I finally came across an explanation that made sense to me. It said that the food companies processed out they parts of the food that bacteria would eat that limited shelf life. Guess what is is your body that helps you digest food?!?! So, after they take out the good stuff, what is left tastes like cardboard. Then they add sodium and sweeteners (many hidden behind all sorts of different chemical names) to make it tasty again.

I’m trying to just watch my portions, not eat total crap and do a minimal workout. Normal MN diet of casseroles, meat/potatoes, breakfast for any meal of the day. 8 minute daily workout (50 push-ups, 20 leg lifts, 40 crunches, 25 squats)

I’m giving caffeine/coffee a break (drank coffee by the gallon, started getting vertigo….). It’s been a week, trying out some herbal teas.

Always a pleasure hearing about people trying to better themselves. From what I’ve read, it’s more about persistence than anything. (I’d never make it to the gym consistently!)

A lot in life is habit....many times just bad habits!
There have been times in my life, that breakfast for supper was perfect! I was the only cook!!
I could live off a good garden!! Usually it is good. Last year storms wiped it out 3 times though!
