Early-A Tank Grommet

I feel like this is a bit of a silly question but I can't find my answer in the FSM. 1966 Valiant with a new tank and filler neck uses the type of grommet shown below. I never realized I tore the new grommet slightly when installing until recently so now I'm replacing it. Previously I installed it with the tapered end outwards. Is that the correct orientation?

Use a little dish soap all over the wet grommet to install. I expect the taper should be outside the tank.

Be sure to check the i d and o d of your tank and tube.

I have the “small” tank opening and filler neck so that’s the only grommet that fits. I’ve seen another one supposedly for a 66 but the inside diameter is all wrong for my filler neck.
