I'm switching toan electronic ignition from points.. I bought the pro form kit that comes with a single ballast/dist/module. The instructions are terrible and I'm a bit confused. My question is the original setup called for the ign.2 wire from the the ign. switch to go to the ballast resistor, and the start wire to go to the starter relay. In the new set up the want the start wire from the ign. switch and the ign.1(run wire) wire to go to the ballast. problem is they don't tell you what to do with the ign.2 wire from the original set up. Do I send it to the starter relay?

thanks.

I have NO idea what you are talking about. Is this the MP "Mopar" kit, or some off brand of that or something completely different?

For the Mopar ECU type systems, WHICH USE the newer 2 pin resistor and 4 pin ECU design, the wiring on your ORIGINAL ballast is UNchanged electrically.

Here's a diagram:

Ignition_System_4pin.jpg

Follow along. Notice the top right wire going off the page titled "existing wire." This is your original dark blue "ignition run" or IGN 1 wire. Down through the resistor and off to the coil POS

What is NOT shown in that diagram, is that at the BOTTOM of the resistor is your original brown resistor bypass, known as IGN2 Leave this connected.

Notice that in reality there are only TWO new added wires

One is the wire marked "new wire" going to the top of the coil resistor from the new ECU. This is picking up "ignition run" for the ECU

The second is the one marked "new wire" at the far left going to the coil NEG. If you have a tach, it remains connected there as well.

The ECU MUST be grounded. Scrape the firewall bolt holes clean, as well as the rear of the ECU ears. Mount tight using good hardware, and star lock resistors.

That color diagram is wrong, referring to the "yellow wire on start relay"

Yeah, that diagram sucks! That's how my 68 was wired when I got it. When I brought up the rpms, the voltage from the downhill side of the ballast resistor would backfeed the starter relay and trigger the starter while it was already running. Not a good thing...

Your question is unclear to me. There should only be two loose wires in the kit harness. The black/yellow wire goes to the coil negative in place of the old wire from the points distributor. The old wire from the points distributor to the coil negative should be the only original wire you need to remove. The blue/yellow wire in the kit goes on the run side of the ballast resistor. That would be the opposite side of the ballast resistor from where the + wire to the ignition coil is connected. That part of the instructions is rather obtuse. They want you to cut the existing connector off the blue wire from the ignition switch run circuit to the ballast resistor and put that wire and the blue/yellow wire from the kit harness together in the same connector, then plug that back onto the ballast resistor. Hopefully, you have the correct tool to crimp or solder the connector. The start relay should not enter into it at all. This is if I understand your question and the kit directions correctly. Always iffy.

Is this the kit? https://www.proformparts.com/produc...TRIBUTOR_KIT_273_318_340_360_/category_id/198

Thanks for all the help everybody, sorry if I was a little unclear. Rusted wrench is correct, this is the kit https://www.proformparts.com/product...ategory_id/198

My question is this: in my original points ignition set up, the diagram shows that the Ign.1 wire goes to one side of the ballast resistor and the Ign.2 wire goes to the other side of the ballast resistor. They also show the orange Start wire from the ignition switch going to the starter relay. This is how it was wired and ran.

So in the electronic set up, they want me to connect the "start" wire from the ignition switch to one side of the ballast and the "run" wire to the other. If the start wire is my orange wire thats running to the starter relay do I take it off the starter relay and connect it to the ballast resistor. This seems weird to me. In their diagram they call it "start position from ign. switch" are they really talking about the pink Ign.2 wire and not the orange ST. wire?

thanks

Ignore the start wire. Please re-read post two. The ballast wiring is UNCHANGED from points. All you do is to add the wire coming from the new box to the "blue" IGN1 side of the ballast

In fact, if you carry your old points dist, and the system quits, you can simply unplug the box, unhook the coil NEG wire, and plug the old distributor back in.

thanks for the response 67dart273. this is the kit i bought.

you can see that the diagram is a bit different than yours.. My main question is this, in their diagram the wires marked "start position on the ign. switch" and "run position" are in fact which wires on the back of my ign. switch? I have on orange Acc/St wire which was originally run to my starter relay. I also have a Red Ign. 1 and a pink Ign. 2. Originally Ign.1 and 2 were run to the opposite sides of the ballast resistor with Ign. 2 splicing off to the coil. You can see in their diagram the call for the "start wire" to go to one side of the ballast. This is where I'm confused. Do they want me to remove my Oarnge ST wire from the starter relay and connect it to the ballast? Or are they in fact just calling IGN.2 the start position?

the latter makes more sense to me.

thanks for any input.

cheers!

OK gotcha, disregard my last post then. That's what I thought, their wording was just unclear. this was the last piece of the puzzle. Hopefully gonna fire this brand new 360 up today.

thanks a bunch!
