Figured I'd share eventually what I've been up to for the last half of the month of September-Lol. I had thrown our hat in the ring that is the EMC (EngineMaster's 'Challenge) put on by HotRod Mag/Amsoil and hosted at the JE Pistons manufacturing facility in Mentor, Ohio this year. I sat on my hands with this project due to various reasons that I'm not going to discuss for way too long and got a VERY late start on my first carb'd/conventional distributor G3 build that we would enter. We physically started the build Sep 19 which as the results would show was not the best idea. However the G3 goes together like Lego and things like having the oil pan and front cover off 3 times and intake 4 to make changes are truly a breeze. Anything you want to know? Either about the build or even the contest itself--Ask away. We are definitely attending next year based on my conversations with Evan Perkins (JE pistons) with a HIGHLY developed G3.

The build:
Early 5.7 block, Early 5.7 heads
353.8 cubes 3.940" x 3.625" (6.1 crank)
6.2" Arrow rods (1.89" x .866")
Custom JE pistons +10 cc dome comp 11.66
Prefix front mount distributor kit
Heads cut .066" to make them closed chamber (72cc)
Ritter intake with carb pad whacked 1.312" (needs another .500" off)
2.02" x 1.575" valves Ti intakes (oh boy is there a story on the Ti intakes)
Comp conical springs 130/370
Manton rocker shafts
Comp custom cam 241/247 @ .050" 111 LSA .635"
Stock rockers/stock pushrods/lash caps on intakes
Crower lifters Non-short travel
Stock truck oil pan/p-u/pump
Pacesetter 1 3/4" x 3" 300C headers

Torque is what is needed to really score well at the EMC and torque is what we lacked. Mainly because I built the engine too small for the air speed of the intake/heads and headers. I also missed on the cam by miles. If I could do over again (EMC 2019) I would bump displacement to 375-380 ish inches, pull cam timing back a whole bunch and/or run 4-5 cams through it searching for one with the right events, and pray that the rules open up to allow the dual plug ignition and custom dyno style headers. I believe a win could be had with an early start.
Even still this is easily the most effortless 550 hp @ 7000+ 354 inch smallblock I have ever built. It's quite tame at idle, and rpm's with ease. It peaks somewhere between 7200-7500 rpm and I believe it won't take much to get this up to 600+hp which is where it needs to be.
Yes the G3 is where its at and the rockers are its Achille's heel-well an affordable one that is.

So a 5.7L with early heads? Interesting choices. Was that supposed to fit in any actual car? :) I've heard EMCs are both intense and a blast so good luck.

You guys did pretty well for short notice!

I'm thinking G3 for my 68 cuda. Easy 400 hp mostly stock for street driving.

I went to a local sports bar right around the corner to watch the Indians playoff game after work. (Choked) I was only a couple miles from the airport.
Anyway I noticed a two guys sitting there with carry-on bags and Engine Masters logos on their shirts. I went over and talked to them and asked if they were at the event. Yep, said they actually put it on and were returning to CA. They said the theme was old school this year with carbs and distributors. Told them I was a Mopar guy and I think they mentioned there was a G3 there.

I told them if I had known it was going on that I would've attended as it's only about 50 miles away.
Next year for sure.

It was built for the EMC, I am however retaining the most of the build for my D150 truck project, and yes it will fit in that nicely. Thanks, J.Rob

The rockers are stout and light. That isn't the problem . It's getting any sort of meaningful lift with a roller tip is next to impo$$ible. The scrub is terrible as well. J.Rob

Gotta ask
I have a 6.4 truck engine that I have considered replacing the stock rods and pistons with goods parts that I haven’t chosen yet but I’m thinking high compression (13-1 ) a cam that will support the heads cubis inch and compression put a carb on it with e85
And hope for the best 630ish maybe
You think it’s possible I know it’s a loaded question
