Ok- So, could anyone help me to decipher my engine numbers?
'67 Barracuda Formula S
273 - Commando

on the drivers side: 2806030 - 273 - 2
on the passengers: 10-13-66 clock at midnight/ noon
on the front of the block, below the heads C273 12-20 (this number is very worn and extremely difficult to read- looks like the stamp wasn't very deep to begin with. I could be missing a couple of numbers, but it's the best I can do...

ANy help would be much appreciated. From what I have been able to find is this:
1) most of the casting info I have read suggests the 2806030 is a 318, but IT SAYS 273!
2) 10-13-66 means the engine was built on October 13, 1966. My car is a '67.
3) I know the C273 means (1967)(273).

Does anyone know if there are any other numbers that I am missing?- I can't find a VIN anywhere!!! This stuff is confusing...

Thanks in advance!!:read2:

I bet your car was built with a 273 in Oct or Nov, or possibly Dec of 66.

318s were not installed in A-Bodys until 1968.

Thats what I was hoping...

I'm pretty sure the numbers on the car match, but it's hard to PROVE...

If my car was built in '66, would it have a higher sequence number on the VIN? or is the sequence number irrelevant?

Is there a 7 under the F on the fender tag?

on the drivers side: 2806030 appears to be a 318 casting.
Could it be 2658920?
I'm not sure what the - 273 - 2 are.
10-13-66 clock at midnight/ noon: that is the casting date/time, (time is really the shift I think).
C273 is year displacement: 1967 273
12-20 is the date the engine was assembled, this date should be prior to the date on the fender tag.

Open the driver's door, the VIN is located in between the hinges.

There are also numbers stamped on the radiator support and the trunk lip, both on the driver's side.

Do you have pics you can post?

If it has 273 cast on the side it is a 273. A late/66 casting date on the block would be normal for a 67 car.

In other words…. Everything looks normal.

10-13-66 means the block was cast on Oct. 13, 1966. It should have been assembled in March of '67. The 273-2 means the displacement of the engine was 273 cubic inches. The 2 was the version of the casting cores used. For the first couple of years of production the 318s used the same casting number as the 273 but used different casting cores i.e. 318-3 instead of 273-2. Chrysler didn't start stamping VINs on engines and transmissions until 1968, so prior to then there was no such thing as "numbers matching". The model year started out with sequence number 1. The higher the sequence number, the later in the model year it was made.
