Engine stand mod for 904 rebuild

-

I can't remember where I saw the pics, but I do remember that it was a hoop that went over the top side of the case and bolted to the tabs that stick out on either side of the case. It mounted to the engine stand so the trans can be worked on upside down or input/output ends. If I ever get brave enough to rebuild an automatic, I may try to build such a bracket first.

Found Troy's. Winters are long up here so hope I can get it "done".
This 904 will pop my cherry lol.

I made mine with some flimsy steel from Lowes. Looked inadequate , but once triangulated, turned out pretty stiff. No welding , just nuts and bolts. Flying by the seat of my pants. My pics are crap.

Nicely done. Looks like a Meccano set lol.
No problems with fully loaded trans?
Thanks.
LOL. I had to look up Meccano. When I was a kid it was an Erector set. No problems when fully loaded. It felt very stable. When pushing/pulling on it , it looked like there was more flexing in the engine stand itself.

Steve,

I fumbled around rebuilding my first one without a jig. Certainly would have made it easier, so definitely build one.

I was always apprehensive about rebuilding an automatic but it isn't hard. I used the book and an old Chrysler video a member sent me. I kept rewinding the video to double and triple check everything. Someone said "keep it very clean, so I kept swapping the brown paper when it got dirty, lol. Been beating on it for 5 years now!

Thanks guys, altho there is no serious issues with 904, we've had car 13 years now and I think it's due for an upgrade/rebuild.
@WV64Signet have you got more pics? I like the simplicity of threaded rod!

Only other stand photo I could find right off.

I can pull the hardware and give the measurements. Pretty straightforward

OK mocked up some threaded rod. I didn't want to cut any yet, so I used 3/8 for 4th hole(shorter rod in pic) and 7/16 in other 3 holes.
I used grade 5 rod, I may see how much grade 8 is?

Nice

Just need to adjust lengths to be able to rotate. I did double nuts on the ends but they weren't holding it on, just making sure nothing slipped off.

Got it done. Pretty sure it's grade 5 rod, I'll call Bolts Plus tomorrow about grade 8. Made a frickin mess lol, but I put the spare 904 on the stand myself. Only soaked 1 foot lol.
The longest rod(drive side rear) has a decent bend.
Thanks again!

Steve, I like that a lot. I gotta make one now. The only thing I would change and will is to use water pipe over the all thread rod so you can tighten it all down and it doesn't just "hang" on the rods. But that's a really cool idea. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Rob, I was thinking same thing. My brain was trying to process if pipe over the rod would stabilize/sturdy it. I nutted both sides of the arms and tightened as well as the bosses on trans.
