So am I doing something wrong or is it true the the engine to transmission supports are different between a 318 and 340/360

These supports came off a 318 and the driver side seems just a little short

The passenger side seems to fit

Any light to shed on this ??

Are they swapable from side to side?

I usually discard them.

I never noticed this since they never get out back on my builds. Sorry. I think your right then. 2 different lengths.
The boss on the engine is moved. Hey wonder how often they did this.

My assumption is that you are putting them on a 340/360.

Measure the one you have, I bought a set a while back. If my driver's side is longer then what you measure perhaps we could arrange a swap, I would be wanting a 273 / 318 set.

Measure from where it mates to the trans bell housing to the block hole center.

It will be a few days before I get the dart out to get the tote down.

You are correct, not all small blocks got the same ones
Exactly how its divided between which fit where, I dont know

Like most everyone else, I just throw them in the parts pile. I seem to remember the difference being the transmission, not the motor. 727 braces are longer than 904 braces. I went downstairs and measured from the center of the drivers side brace hole, to the back of the bell housing flange on both a 318, and a 340. Both measured 9".....so I'm sticking with the difference being in the transmissions.

Seems like I recall that being the difference also.

yeah, just throw them away... we all know that the Chrysler Corporation just put them on for fun and to spend money on a part that wasn't needed because it they wanted to make less money on their cars. I mean why provide support to an aluminum transmission case bolted to a cast iron block...

I can remember years ago having to remove the drivers side support to install the higher hp starter cause it was longer than the lower power starters. Kim

Look at how those are made. Super easy to make out of angle iron.

You need to order a bracket stretcher kit.

I've been guilty of tossing bits like this but they DO serve a purpose. Today I'd fab a little piece to extend that support.

I see many have no use for these brackets. I personally have seen broken bellhousings. one particular one was the result of loss of control and parking on a hard snowbank. So hitting the ditch in the winter for most of these cars is highly unlikely today,so i can understand them being left out.
i will keep them on my engines,as they were originally intended.
When i get a chance i will crawl under my power wagon 318/727 and compare to 318/904 i have.

as far as modifying a short one, i may have done it in the past.

Might you have two right sides on there? They are different left to right, the left has a large clearance for the starter.

I really like your sarcasm!
The point is, the factory made and installed them for a purpose.
They engineered the cars to last through 5 years or until the warranty was up.
Why would they bother with the hours spent engineering them and the added expense if they thought that they were unnecessary?
It's along the same lines as torque boxes on the high performance cars they sold.
You couldn't see them, but they were there because they felt that it was needed.
Kinda makes you wonder why the H.P. engines didn't come with torque straps, but every car got these engine to bellhousing straps...........

They serve a purpose and I always use them.I have seen broken bell housings and the bottom ears broken off of the block too.
Why only believe in half of the engineering?
And yes Rainy length is determined by trans
904 or 727 Merry Christmas. :)

Exactly this^^^^ They were engineered and designed into the entire equation. They certainly do serve a purpose.

I've never seen any on big blocks? Maybe they got gone before I worked on em, but I've put starters on big block cars, and swapped transmissions on untouched originals....never seen the braces. :realcrazy:

Some of us like to use all the original factory parts.

I know I do.

So I for one salute you for wanting to keep them.

I saved them, and have always planned on putting them back on my 70 Challenger A66 car. Rear frame rail tie down brackets are still on it, and will remain there too! :) It's the only car that I own that will be an original type restoration. The rest of my cars are just old hot rodded up stuff where things like that don't matter. :p

Big blocks have more attaching surface than small blocks, ever notice how much smaller inspection cover is for big blocks?
