The filler neck on my 74 Dart Sport (now a 71 Duster), has (had) a sort of baffle in it that makes it really hard to clean out. I'm guessing that the purpose of it is to prevent back splash when fueling.

I took it out and was able to clean the two pieces. I figured I could slide it back in and replace the spot weld that was holding it in place. Even if I ruined it, I could get a new one. Well, I don't know how they got it in there, but it wasn't easy getting it out, and it distorted it as I pulled it out.

Sooo, do I need it?

Do you mean the nozzle restrictor at the fill end of the tube, or the "flow plate(?)" at the tank end? The fill restrictor probably isn't necessary anymore- it was there primarily to keep you from putting leaded fuel into an unleaded fuel system. Back when leaded fuel was still readily available. The one at the tank end aids the fuel flow into the tank when filling, and probably helps keep fuel from sloshing back up the fill tube when cornering and possibly pi$$ing out onto your quarter panel and paint. Neither is critical to operation, so it's your call whether you fix either one.

I'll post a couple pics tomorrow.

It's not the restrictor. They started in 75 with the cats and no lead.

It's almost as long as the filler neck itself. It had the usual rusty/white crud that I've seen in other old fuel system parts. Oh, it also has a few louvers near the bottom end of it.

I think that part is to help the flow of air out while fueling so it doesn't puke all down the side of the car and all over your feet and legs.
Some think it's a anti siphon block so your gas doesn't get stolen, but I can get a 1/2 hose past mine easy enough so I don't buy that theory.

1st- Pulling it out curled it as it came out.
2nd-Same.
3rd-Insert at top, almost as long as the neck.
4th-Top end has the louvers, I believe I said it was at the bottom. Damage is from me pulling it out. The spot weld was at the top, too.
5th-Tongue shape is at the bottom. It stuck out of the neck a bit.

I agree, Trailbeast, I think it's a baffle to avoid splash back. I pumped gas in the 70's. There were some cars that were a real headache getting them to take gas.

I can always buy a new one. I see Classic has them, for one. I will try it as is. The car will be in epoxy primer at first, so if it backs up on me, no big deal. If it does back up, I'll buy a new one before it gets paint. I'm sure it would happen again eventually.
