I am getting ready to modify(cut down) an Explorer 8.8 rear to fit my '74 Scamp. Do I have to remove the entire center section(pumpkin?) before cutting and welding the axle tube, or can this be done with those parts still in the rear end?

Also...if anyone in the Los Angeles area is looking for an 8.8
explorer rear, the junk yard where I picked up the extra short side axle has about 15 of them for sale....$200.00 each

I don't think cutting/welding on the tube would be near enough to hurt the differential.

Thanks...I was thinking the same but needed reassurance due to the fact almost everyone here onFABO KNOWS MORE THAN ME

I cut mine right around the end where it tapers down. DO yourself a favor and make sure the tube is straight, take out the gears, and eyeball down the tube, my factory perch welds warped the tube, it can be corrected with a 46 grade (HF tow chain) chain and a bottle jack with a plywood base opposite the warp. Trust your eyes and when it's straight you will see the circles in the tube line up. Check out my build thread.
