I recently started smelling fuel when I went out to the garage where my Duster is stored. When I left the house, the engine stuttered and stalled when I let off the gas. Now the smell is much stronger and seems to be coming from the area around the fuel pump. There are no signs of fuel leakage under the engine. Any thoughts?

Check the engine oil for a gasoline smell.
When the diaphragm in the fuel pump goes, it usually leaks gas into the oil through the fuel pump hole in the block.
If there is a strong gas smell, don't run the engine any more!
Change the fuel pump (don't buy the cheapest one) and change the oil.
(I ran into this a couple of months ago with my car)

Oh, the one I replaced it with was a Delphi MF-0048 that came from Rock Auto.
This is on a '69 Dart with a 340 engine.

Ventilate the garage before doing anything.
check oil for - smell or overfull - look for leak with engine running .
My old 72 Duster was getting very poor fuel mileage, I was checking over the engine, and checking the ignition timing. With the engine running, I noticed that the crimp around the stock fuel pump was leaking. But I didn't see a leak with the engine shut off.
