Liberal or not, the song was about growing up in the '70s. Probably the greatest song Springsteen ever wrote. Music and words... a masterpiece. Great lyrics, song tells a story. The studio version is much, much better than the live show posted above.

You know, I've heard of him, but other then "born in the USA" I don't think I've ever heard any other of his songs
Funny thing about growing up in the 70s, I was born in 82...which may be why I didn't know it

I actually had a buddy back in HS whose father WAS queer. Just married Mom so they could have kids and look respectable "back in the day."
Dad and Mom were very nice people.
And a lady who's got a decent claim to being Freddy Mercury's daughter's releasing a book soon.
