Well, my new garage is almost done. It will be used to house my 1974 Duster that I am ready to tear into.

Well I wanted to get some opinions on wiring. Ie. # of outlets, 220 etc.

This is what I thought so far (by the way it is 32X24)

I was thinking at least 3 outlets on all three walls and and a 220 outlet somewhere for the compressor. Four eight foot fluorescent lights. 3 out side lights. 2outlets in the ceiling one for the garage door opener and the other for a drop light. I was going to put a couple of outlets in the workbench for the grinder and anything else I wanted to plug in.

Does this sound sufficient?

Thanks!8)

I suppose it does but one thing I've learned is that you can never have too many. Get a panel that has room for more breakers in case you want to add anything down the road.

I myself was thinking 3 220 volts on each wall, in the middle., on the floor (ish)
3 110 outlet on each wall even spaced.

overhead lighting is never enuff, but, I'm planning on a line on each side of the car. longitude and then a 4ft. pair up front and in back.

OH, yes, new breaker box!!! Just for the garage!!! IN THE GARAGE!!!!!!!

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to flush mount some fluouresents into the floor for some uplighting. If and when I build my dream shop I would like to try it. I never have enough light when working under a car.

I ran two 2" conduits to my 26x36 detached garage. One for the service and another for future cable tv, telephone, ect. I put a 100 amp service out there and put 9 100 watt standard lights on the ceiling and a receptacle about every 8 feet or so plus one for each garage door. I have three outside motion flood lights and four other outside lights. Also lights on the second floor. Still have a lot of extra breakers should I want to add more. So I think you should add more receptacles on the walls just so its always convenient when it comes time to plug stuff in. And put them in between each garage door. Remember, you will have stuff in there, sometimes blocking a plug, put a lot of them in there and you will be happy later.

Oh, and the plugs on the back wall I put up high in case I ever want to add a work bench.

One other thing I would mention, I would make all your 120 volt receptacles 20 amp. That way you won't be throwing breakers if you plug in a welder or some other high amp tool.

You want at least two 220 outlets. At least wire one for an air compressor and stub one in for later use for a welder...
With a shop the size you've built, it might be likely that you will have a (or some) workbenches in the center, not just along the wall. Plan some outlets accordingly. An alternative, I built a sturdy workbench with wheels, and wired an outlet on each side of it with a 12 gauge extension cord which can run from the bench to 25'.
Like you, I ran elec., cable and phone at the same time. Great when the games come on.

20 amp is what I put in for all receptacles. Four across the back where my work bench is and two on each side (24x24 shop) I can can run all kinds of thing and not blow a breaker. I put in two 220's one for the welder the other for the compressor.

I put two 30 amp 220 volt receptacles in my 24 x32 in the ceiling about ten feet in from diagonal corners, opposite each other. one works a 5000 watt heater for those times when the chill needs to be knocked off while the wood stove gets going, or either one will accept my welder for access to anywhere in the shop

I did like 340sfastback, 18" off the floor and about 42" off the floor. One 220 works for me, but if you're running wires add one at the opposite end of the garage. Also, use GFI's.

Nice garage. Do not forget the cable for the 52 inch big screen!

When I was looking for a new house when I moved here, my realtor asked me what I was looking for.
I replied.....
My dream house is a 6 car 1 bedroom garage with child-proof door locks.

I am still waiting.
