It will take out the gear vendor not the tranny. They come with a electronic board to keep it from happening. But as AJ and I both did we wired ours without the board But still have a light to tell when it's in over drive. AJ can tell you why they break better than me.
Butting in a gear vendor in my car was the best thing I've done, I really like it.

I don't know how the clutch in there works, but I can tell you that when I backed up like two feet, it slowed the engine almost to a stall, and I knew I was in trouble right away. It felt like a cone-clutch locking up. $1470Can. mistake right there.

So, if you have the GV OD system off, backing up presents no problems to the GV … right?

I want something robust and reliable. I would have to use the systems electronics in order to ensure the GV was off every time it went into reverse. I've looked a couple times for this reverse issue on the website, but I'm not finding it.

I had a problem with my electronics that's why I did away with it and I only use it when I am doing over 45 mph.

        That's right
        The GVOD has two stipulations;
        1) you cannot be in OD and simultaneously back up,and
        2) you cannot downshift it while it is receiving power.

The GVOD uses the driveshaft to drive it's internal pump to make the pressure, so the slower you drive and the lower number your gear, the longer it takes to shift.
With a manual trans selecting a split gear requires you to declutch, then shift. I have found that you can do this simultaneously; if you hesitate just a few milliseconds while it engages ALL THE WAY.
So with 3.55s,I normally do not split first and second unless at WOT and winding up past 5000rpm. With anything over 4.10s it was not a problem.
I have no problem downshifting into a split gear, when doing it properly.

With an automatic,You cannot declutch, so it would require a bit of learning to get it right. The standard 904/727 ratios work pretty nice. 2.45-1.91-1.45-1.13-1.00-.78, with splits of .78-.76-.78-.88-.78into OD. GV ratios in red.the split from 2od to 3od is .69;pretty nice.
If you gear to trap in 1.13 ratio you will post a good run. For a 106mph car this might be 4.10s and the starter would thus be 10.0, and the cruiser would be 3.20s, making 65=2580 at zero-slip with 27s; pretty sweet deal. And the 4.10s will slam the GV into gear tire-chirping-hard when used as a splitter. For a faster car you can trap in direct.

If you just want to use it as an overdrive, then their ECU will take care of things.

You were always good at running the numbers AJ. I called Gear Vendors and they told me when down shifting with an automatic give the car a bit of gas before you take it out of over drive that way it does a smooth down shift before you let off the gas.

but you can also leave it OD and go from OD3 - OD2 with no problem? also, just letting it do it's thing with the computer, how does it kick down? does it drop the OD and go from , say OD3 TO 2ND?

It does not outshift by itself; you have to command it with the provided switch.
And yes you can leave it in overdrive, and downshift the main trans exactly as you do normally.......... except when the driveshaft rpm falls below the pumps ability to maintain pressure, then the unit falls out of gear. Once it is in shifted, you can do whatever you want in the main trans. And with 4.10s or better, you can drive pretty slow and not have a drop out.
