Getting the body blasted...

K so small parts i wanna get dipped. But the shell itself i think i want it blasted so i know what i'm working with before i start randomly replacing metal(is what i have got from a few key people here) What is the best type of Blasting i should get it done with? and what should i put on the body right after its done so i dont get surface rust all over it again right away!? And as for the underbody i have a underbody spray i wanna take that off before it goes to the blasting guys i think cuz they said its alot of work to get off. whats peoples input that have had this done?

I've done this a few times and it's not a lot of fun.

I assume all the glass and trim has been removed, interior gutted and the drivetrain and suspension is gone.

I suggest soda blasting the exterior panels and sandblast the inside and underside areas. Stay away from the roof and any large flat panels. They tend to warp very easily. Strip those panels with a 6 inch 60 grit disc on a low rpm grinder/polisher (careful on the edges and any high spots).

I don't know where the car spent most of it's life so the process may change depending on the condition of the sound deadener. If you have a safe well ventilated area to work in, I'd try a small butane torch and a scraper to remove most of the material. Heat it up and scrape it off. Then use a low VOC paint remover and scraper/wire brush for the remainder. Follow up with a lacquer thinner wet on dry wipe.

After the car is stripped, coat it with a DP primer, vynl wash primer, or even zinc chromate primer to prevent rust flash.

I was going to say media blast and then a nice coat of primer lol....but this guy seems to know what he is talking about,so go with that lol
 
A good/experienced sandblaster will not warp the panels.....I have been involved in several builds that were blasted completely with zero warping. If warping is of concern, don't do the middle of the roof, quarters, door, hood.....they are easy to DA the paint off anyway

Soda blasting has it's drawbacks......you have to wash it after blasting to remove the residue left behind, I hope you get it all because it will have an impact on adhesion if you dont. After washing you have to run a DA over the whole car since you just used water to washed a bare metal car.

Sandblasting goes straight from the blaster (after all the sand is blown out) to primer......just find a good reputable shop to do it, not the cheapest. One thing is if the car is not on a rotisserie or completely blown out sand will trickle out of the rockers forever!!!

Media blasting is very good for paint/ most bondo.....but will not touch rust in nooks/crannies
