You read that right.
A blizzard warning has been issued for the Big Island of Hawaii with up to 12" of snow forecast for this weekend. The blizzard warning is from 6pm Friday through 6am Sunday local time.
In addition to blizzard conditions, wind gusts of up to 100mph are expected. This is all limited to the upper elevations of both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, the peaks of which reach nearly 14,000 feet elevation.

Yes there's an observation tower there as well. People have even been known to do a little skiing up there... Short answer there's snow every year..

That's Mt Whitney sized  and taller than Mammoth Mtn. Heaven knows they get a buncha snow. Just never think of tempachers in the 20s an 30s in Hawaii

I understand that Hawaiian 'snow' is like corn kernels. And those mountains are HUGE. If Mauna Kea were above water, it would be higher than Everest at 30,610 feet.

So where's the surprise? The mountains there get snow on them a lot. I would think a blizzard on a mountain top is somewhat normal. Where's @63spf ? See what he says.

Very true, It would be the tallest mountain ! And also we dont really have soft flaky Snow its more like sleet ! We got our first real snow fall this winter on Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa this past week above 12k ft. elevation

"
Is Mauna Kea the tallest mountain in the world?
Mauna Kea, or "White Mountain"a volcano of the "Big Island" of Hawaii, is the tallest mountain on earth. It measure about 10,200 meters from base to summit. Chimborazo is a volcano in the Andes of Ecuador. It measures about 6,310 meters above sea level. "

Is Mauna Kea dormant? I bet it had some pretty gnarly eruptions to get that tall. Any idea when it last erupted?

Yes Mauna Kea is Dormant, But Mauna Loa is Active ! and only a few hundred feet lower elevation ! It last went off in 86 I believe and as i live on the southern slop of Mauna Loa for the past 40 + years , We were glad the flow went towards the other side of the island.

We have had ice on the top of our water tanks and animal water troughs about the 4k ft elevation before. but that has not happened lately.

The Hawaiian Islands plate is moving NW over an active volcanic rift. If you look at the islands they are somewhat inline to the direction the plate is moving (NW) with the southern tip being the zone that is currently over the 'plume'. There is a new island forming as we speak to the SE of the last island to the south. The farther the dormant volcano is from the SE tip, The less likely it will become active again as its moving farther from the plume. IIrc Midway Island is one of the oldest in this chain of events being one of the first visible in this chain on this plate. Imagine a cutting torch under a 1/2 plate of steel and the plate is moving diagonally over it very slowly. Eventually the torch will break through in a diagonal line. BOOM!
