Theres some dirt and leaves that got in through the speedo cable hole, and through the back where the driveshaft goes.

i called the local transmission place and they want 80 bucks just to take off the rear extension and wipe it out. Now, ive never tanken apart a tranny, but im mechanically inclined. The back half looks like its just held on by some bolts and factory gasket sealer. The transmission guy said that it cost $80 because there is a snap ring in there thats difficult.

anyways, whats involved in this? Would it be worth the $80 to take it over there? Or should i just take it apart and wipe it off and bolt it back together?

thanks!

you can buy a set of snap ring pliers and do it yourself for less the 20 bucks..

six bolts that hold the tail shaft on....also one large snap ring ....that is it ....the snap ring needs to be spread ...

pretty simple...

Yeah, a good pair of spreaders is all you really need extra to do that job. If it's been out in the rain, I'd pull the pan an make sure water didn't get into it through the dip stick. You'd be amazed how much can seep down through there.

this is after the bolts are removed...also need to make sure the speedometer pinion is removed..

does the snap ring need to be spread before you can pull the tail shaft off? or is it just when you put it back on? or both?

Both

It is literally a 2 minute job to remove the Tailshaft Housing if you have some assistance/a friend helping.

I just tore down 2 904s last month, an MA904 (4-Cylinder 4x4 904) and a TF904 (Small Block RWD 904) and converted the SB 904 over to a 4x4 (swapped the internals and tailshaft over to the small block case)

Took me a couple minutes to spin the bolts out of the housing and spread the snap ring while my dad slid it off the back of the transmission. Takes a little longer if you're doing it solo, because that snap ring is a pain in the butt to keep open while trying to wiggle that housing loose

EDIT :

Yes they looked rough, but were both immaculate inside (hard to believe, isn't it?)

By the way, who all knew that the 904 Non-Lockup was used behind the Mitsubishi 4-Cylinder engines in the 1979 - 1993 Dodge D50 trucks? Yes that thing with the tiny bellhousing and the funky transfer case is a 904. And it had heavier internals than the Small Block 904 (from a '72 Dart)

I combined the two and used the weird hybrid to stick a '69 273 in my '84 D50
