Hi All,

Your take or knowledge. I'm looking at a 69 Dart GTS, it has a white strip on the tail GT Sport, and it has GTS badging on the hood and the trunk panel. What make a Dart a GTS vs GT or other? Is there some special code on the fender tag or something else to make it a GTS? TIA.

It will be found in the VIN and on the fender tag. LS23 for all, except the 1967 GTS.

Check if the VIN on dash matches the data tag.

also check the last digits of VIN stamped at the radiator core support near top of radiator. Also checked VIN numbers stamped on trunk seal lip.

Missing any or combination of these items can mean very significant value changes. And more than that, it indicates a fake and/or misrepresented car.

GT wouldn't have came with a 340/383/440, plus GT would have a different side trim/badging. LS23/LS27 would be GTS vin.

Likewise!

Also in 1969 you could get a 340 in a Dart Swinger 340 model. That was lower cost than a GTS and came standard with lesser trim, interior, etc. Two different Dart models to get a 340 in 1969; GTS and Swinger 340.

Now in 1969 for Plymouth, you could get a 340 standard in a 'Cuda model. I think the 'Cuda may have been lower cost than a Formula S. AND you could get a 340 in a regular Barracuda model. Or you could of course get a 340 as the standard motor in a Formula "S". Three different models to get a 340 for Plymouth in 1969.

In 1968 to get a 340 you HAD to buy a Dart GTS or Barracuda Formula "S" model. The 340 was the standard motor in those models in that year.

Ahh, OK. Like the 68 Bee. It came w/ a 383 , but if Ya ordered a 440, You got the RT. Although you could get a Hemi Bee! Sorry, I digress

More like you had to order a Coronet R/T to get the 440-4bbl motor as standard. Model first. But sorta chicken before the egg kinda deal. Different ways to look at it.

And same for 1969 and 1970 Coronets. And same for 1969 and 1970 GTX for 440-4bbl motors.

Also, not all 1969 GTS's have tail strips. You could delete it. And when you did that you got "GTS" emblems on the fender in the same style as the hood and decklid.

Since the rear stripe said "GTS" in the stripe itself, the car didn't get fender emblems. Because it would have said "GTS" twice on the side of the car.

But if you deleted the stripe, there would be no GTS identification from the side, so they put "GTS" emblems on stripe delete 1969 GTS's.

Yep. 69 GTS 340 vin tag

Next steps:
  1. verify that vin matches the radiator support stamping
  2. verify that vin matches the trunk lip stamping
  3. check if you see signs of 1 or 2 being welded into another body
  4. verify that vin matches the fender tag
  5. verify if the fender tag is original or repop
  6. verify the vin matches the stamping on the engine pad near the oil pan rail
  7. verify the vin matches the stamping on the trans pad
  8. verify if there is a build sheet.
Most cars will not have ALL of those. but if you have more than 2 item missing from bottom and 2 items from the top of the list, you really need to take a deep dive if you think this is a real GTS and price VERY accordingly.

Excellent Advice!

The more items on the list you have, value is added. Some items very little. But all items add to the creditability of the car.

It’s like each car has to make a case for itself.

Right On, where would the vin be on the "trunk lip" Thanks MW

VIN on the trunk lip is driver side toward the front. It's covered by the trunk weatherstrip.
