Stay away .They have firewood.Sent back a coffee table 3 times and entertainment system 2.Original purchase was 5/11/04 .Never got the end tables.I just sent everything back. You'd figure you would get better quality from there. So now no living room furniture since 5/12

We had a similar experience years ago with Farmers. You near bout caint find American made furniture anymore.

We go to the "rooms to go" scratch and dent warehouse a lot.

Used to be some REALLY good deals. Now just fair.

I did get a $799 leaded, beveled glass front full size, two piece hutch for $99 two years ago cause it was missing the three bottom doors. My wife made them from cabinet grade plywood ($40), and you can't tell they're not original to the piece.

back to quality...

From seeing the damaged stuff, I noticed that most is made from one of two super cheap methods.

1- laminated newspaper like sheets.
Really cheesy when you see it unfold.

2- sawdust paste formed in a mold.
They can also give it a "hand tooled" look with this method.

Technically, they are still wood, but that's a far stretch from my definition.

Kane's spokesmodel is smokin hot.

Seams like everything is junk .a few months ago I had problems with a mattress.

Furniture is something I have some knowledge and experience with, both has a hobbyist wood worker and furniture maker, and as a buyer.

When shopping for furniture, like anything else, you can shop price, and get what you pay for, or you can shop quality, pay more but have furniture, even bedding, that lasts decades, generations, and even centuries.

Brand lanes like Lane, Ethan Allen, Leggett & Platt are not the top of the line, but good mid-range quality, with generation lasting ability.

Here is a list of brand names by quality category -

Promotional and Budget quality brands are : Natuzzi, Chateau d Aux, La-Z-Boy, Coaster, Franklin,
Ashley/Millenium, and Bassett.

Lower Middle Quality Brands: Futura , HTL, Simon Li , Flexsteel Domestic, Abbyson Living, Bellanest, Lane, Manwah, Latitudes Flexsteel, Leather Italia USA, Vintage Furniture Classics.

Mid Range Quality :Restoration Hardware, Klaussner Leather, Thomasville, Roche-Bobois, American Leather, Palliser Furniture, Henredon, Bernhardt, Pottery Barn, Omnia Leather/Arizona Leather, Smith Bros, Ethan Allen, and Seven Seas (by Bradington Young).

Middle High Quality:Elite Leather, Sherrill, Envisions (by Bradington Young), Ekornes, Sam Moore,
and Barcalounger.

High Quality:Bradington Young, Hancock & Moore, Presidential Custom, Baja Leather Designs, and American Heritage Custom Leather.

When buying furniture, the name of the store doesn't matter, the brand of the furniture does, however. All of the quality furnishing are made either in the USA, Canada, or Europe. In many cases, these brands can be found in a price range that easily competes with lessor quality furnishings, imported from the far east. THAT is where shopping around will pay off for you.

Of course there are other sources like Ikea, which isn't even listed as a quality line, but, in most cases, for the price Ikea furniture is as good or better than most economy brands.

Always shop around for pricing and quality, and buy the best quality you can afford.

Legally "wood" is anything that is made out of wood which includes particle board. What you need to look for is "solid wood".

I was in the used furniture business for decades and my suggestion for buying quality solid wood furniture is to hit the estate auctions, consignment auctions and garage sales in the older neighborhoods.

La-Z-Boy recliners in my opinion is better than Lane. Both have promotional lines as well as quality lines. The reason I say this is the quality of the reclining mechanisms.

I second that, try to find good vintage/antique pieces, they will last.

Funny just last night I broke the leg off a chair at work, some new, supposedly commercial-grade expensive furniture, we had to move it and I just set it down a little too hard and the wood cracked like a dang matchstick.

"Commercial grade" furniture does not = "quality furniture". Infact, just the opposite. Most "commercial grade furnishings are of lesser quality simply because people tend to shop price when furnishing their office (unless it's a very high end office, ie: a large law firm, or a multi-national corporation., and even then only the upper echelon get the really good stuff.
Don't confuse "Office grade" or "Office quality" with good quality furniture. It's usually not.

Excellent list.

We used to buy a lot antique furniture just for the quality of construction (love the mission period). ...or I will make it.

The last couple of "new" pieces ..that we thought were quality, weren't.

Didn't know the info on commercial stuff..

My wife and I have been looking and the Havertys had the best look for our home.It seams like no matter what you buy you get crap.

Went round and round with Ashley Furniture...won't be in there store anytime soon. Their furniture is junk too. My family worked for Rowe Furniture they built nice stuff back in the day. I know what quality furniture looks like and it's not what Ashley sells. :)

Anyone know anything about Stickley furniture? I know it's some high dollar stuff. but it didn't make the "list"

That's correct. See the list above (post #5) . Ashley is listed as a "promotional and Budget quality brand.

Ashley has crap even in the showroom.I told tje to beat the crap out of their chinks till they get it right

Ashley has crap even in the showroom....

Yes they do. Unfortunately the places you see advertised on TV, and receive the circulars for in the mail, all have similar product. It is the low end of the furniture spectrum. That's precisely why the call it "Promotional and Budget quality".

In America, you get what you pay for. Merchandise on sale is just sold at a lower mark up, the retailer is never going to sell you something at "cost", or at "invoice", No matter how inexpensive an item is, the retailer is STILL making money on it, and it's probably not a "bargain" even though we think we're getting one, or how much the retailer claims he's "losing".

As I stated earlier, buy the best furniture you can afford, that will probably mean not shopping at places like Haverty's, Ashley, Farmer's, Sam's Walmart, Kmart, Costco, even places like Sears. Do some homework, look at brand names, researching this stuff take only minutes, and, buying better quality furniture at a slightly higher price will, most likely last far longer than the cheap stuff that these retailers sell. So a little research, better quality, and a a little more money will, probably end up costing you less over the years.

My wife and I purchased out bedroom room set in 1975. It will be 40 years old next year. We still have it it, it's still in great condition, everything still works as it should, and all the handles are still on it. The only thing we've done is to replace the mattress about 10 years ago. I good quality mattress will last about 20-25 years.

It cost more than we thought we could afford, but, it is a very high quality set. It's all wood, no particle board, or hard board at all. even the backs of the dresser and the chest of drawers are solid wood (not plywood, not hard board). As it turned out, after nearly 40 years, it was truly one of the best bargains, we ever got.

Same goes for our Living room furniture. We bought it (the chairs, sofa, and tables) in 1988, and they show little if any wear. we've replaced the lamps, and the TV console, the flooring, and painted and repainted the walls, but never had to replace the furniture.

We purchased "Queen Ann" style furnishing, it's classic and has never gone out of style.

It, too was more than we wanted to spend, but, in the long run it was very well worth it.

These furnishing survived 3 kids and their friends, a number of dogs and cats, and years of wear and tare, and believe me, we weren't very gentle with it.

It's true, you DO get what you pay for, and it's up to you to take care of it.

I have bought used name brand furniture off of Craig's list before...normally it's stuff people have in their fancy front room that nobody sits on. For the price of Ashley crap. I got a 7K sectional couch for 500 bucks. Same for the set in my 'fancy' front room. People want to remodel they give their fancy stuff away.

That's an excellent way to get very good quality furniture at a bargain price. Good for you!

A great deal of the highend furnishings get little use or gentle use, and is sold off, because some wone changed the decor of their house, and it usually sells for peanuts compared to what it worth.

One guy had to downsize and his 14 foot wide sectional wouldn't fit. The other doctor couple was moving into a new home and it just didn't match there Décor. :)

Went there to buy the couch and two wing chairs and ended up with the heavy duty iron end tables, sofa table, coffee table which they just wanted me to haul off. Then I also bought their sleigh bed. Took two loads to get everything.

I also bought another very modern coffee table off of CL...it's really cool.

When I get ready to buy my media chairs...guess where I'll be shopping. :)
